One answer .. development costs.

but you never know...it may be picked up one day by a major player in the field and marketed as a stand alone game. DoD and CS were.

It could actually give BIS and Codemaster (Armed Assault 2 and Operation Flash Point 2) one hell of a run for their money.

If they keep providing excellent product for their fans, then the sky is the limit. This game would have a much larger fanbase if it wasn't a mod for a 3 year old game.

still my favorite game.

To even start building a game you would need a game engine.

And the good ones are very expensive.

BF2 should have sponsored PR since its keeping BF2 alive that way. Well lets just say BF2 is doing well enough for themselves but mods will keep the game running for the future when the gmae gets boring. For me, bf2 got boring extremely fast.... now, its Lock On and Arma all the way.

PR would need more players. They bought the idea to cs because it was the biggest multiplayer game on the internet, the fact that took so long says how likely pr is to receive a similar offer unfortunately.

for a pretty basic game engine, this one is $20,000, but is nothing like as good as the BF2 engine so if you think this engine is bad :p

However great the suggestion is, it's been suggested at least two or three times before that I can remember, so I suggest you use the search function and have a look at some of the earlier threads. They've got loads of reasons why it's, unfortunately, not really an option to make a new game.

Locking for resuggestion.

That just depends which engine. There are a few decent free open source engines around, but these are on the whole not nearly as advanced as the major commercial ones.

Things like the Unreal 3 engine, Crysis' CryEngine2 run to tens of thousands, or even hundreds of thousands of dollars. Remember that these things make up a large part of commercial games that can bring in millions in revenue, and the development time put into them is huge. So that price is in no way extortionate or unfair.

edit: KP ninja'd me :(
