Maximizing Speeds

I've got quite the slow DSL connection at my house (fastest download speed I've ever gotten was 40 kb/s), which is also being shared with another computer at my house. Usually my brother is on the internet upstairs while I'm down here trying to play PR while on Teamspeak with my friends. When people talk on Teamspeak it's choppy as hell, and I get the occasional lag bursts in PR. Is there anyway to somehow get my internet to perform better without having to pay money?

ask your brother to not do anything on the net except browse, if he starts anything bandwidth intensive your game is going to lag badly.

it might also be a good idea to look for a better deal, im about to upgrady my internet to a 2mb line with double the bandwidth for a few more pounds.

All he does on the net is browse, nothing else to do upstairs. Maybe I can talk to my dad about upgrading to something faster.

its a good idea, the reason im upgradeing is because we just got a wireless router and 3 computers running on a 512kbps line brings it back down to dialup speeds.

I'm not sure about teamspeak, but ventrillo has a setting to lower the sound quality, so I would assume that a lower sound capture would mean less data to send

with regard to TeamSpeak 2 you can drop the codec which in turn lowers the quality of the overall channel as well as lower bandwidth overheads.
The results in speech wont be great though.

40kB is very good speed.... game takes about 5 plus 5 for TS/Ventrillo...
Lags? maybe u have problem with router... or u have trojan makeing big bandwith... who knows...
Install sygate personal firewall, block all unnecessery appz/processes and there is bandwith meter...watch it...
