Next release on DVD..make a few bucks

Was just thinking about the potential 4 - 6 hour download and how nice it would be to have simply shipped on DVD.
Would be well worth $20.00-$30.00 (cost of copying , mailing etc.) and a small profit for the developers could be wedged in there as a cost of duplicating and handling. Hell I paid $50 for that pile of garbage called CoD4 that sits on my shelf collecting dust.
That way you could make a few $$'s legally as you're not selling the game , only your services for reproducing and shipping. People could prepay so the game could be shipped out a week or so ahead of the free download version.
Just a thought.

the question is, if it would be legal to make profit with selling DVDs

no doubt it probably could be feasibly economically if the developers wanted to try make money that way, but my guess is that they dont have the time for it

Actually I think it could be. There's this one group of guys who made some Youtube videos about lightsaber fighting, a special effects project. They did really well on it, and made another one a couple of years later. They then released that on a DVD, but they got around the Copyright Lucasarts has on Star Wars because the DVD was about the process that went into making the videos, and the fight videos themselves were just included as bonus content. Not sure if EA has a more restrictive Liscence agreement, but it would be interesting to see if it could be done.
PS: Call of Duty 4 does not suck

PR is a community project - why do so many people want to start paying for it? Sure alot of hardcore players would pay, but there wouldnt be many newcomers to the game and alot of occasional players wouldnt bother.
Also how would the money get split - lots of people put masses of their free time into PR, and more importantly lots of people have done so in the past to get it where it is today.
Its a free community project and it should stay that way - if youre willing to pay - make a donation!
( On another point, theres a whole load of legal problems with charging for it )

another idea guys, Supply and Demand, think of the people and how many of these you would either have to mass produce yourself or pay a company to mass produce them, and also your selling EA trademarked code's along with the pr ones, I think it would be a law suit, another thing this is a free mod from what I know since the first came out, if this cost money it would loose people that are regulars and only bring in inexsperianced people who dont know much about the game.

It would basically BE a donation. PR is still a free mod(I did mention the free download option as well) it would simply be a charge for duplicating , time spent packaging , postage etc. You don;t for one minute think that those things you buy that say S&H $25.00 is tha actual S&H cost. Percentage of that goes into increasing profit margins.
Donations are fine (made some myself) but this way I can donate and also end up with the thing on a DVD.
Wasn't thinking in terms of the developers making a profit but of the TEAM to help cover their equipment costs , bandwidth charges etc. etc.

Donation yes, making a profit, no.
Sorry but major copyright issues with selling DVDs based off of another game.

You can not just use someones game engine and make a new game off it and sell it. That is iligal.

They aren't using the engine, they're modding the game. I don't see any problem about having some extra "donations" and giving you a DVD on return.

That would be so rediculously illegal and the end of PR.
I believe also (correct me if I am wrong) according to the EULA at any point if EA saw it as a potential revenue stream they could step in and take any mods as their own. Like what was done with Day of Defeat for Valve/Halflife engine when it went retail.
Imagine if EA snatched up PR? ::shudders::

Guys, I'm pretty sure the OP is just talking about including the PR core and levels installation files on a DVD, not BF2+PR as a complete package.
Still got no idea if it's legal to make any money out of distributing a modification's installer, but I suspect not.

I wouldn't say for the next version but when it reaches 1.xxx it would be nice to mark the event by having a limited number of special edition releases on dvd. With development info, models, sketches etc included as a bonus. Could even come with SP on the disc. It's a long way off yet though.

afaik making profit with mods would break the EULA you sign when installing BF2

can we change the concept name to
MOD download and packaging service?
using our service for Insert price here we will download the PR core files, levels put them on a dvd and ship it. so you have peace of mind that should the security of you computer get breached, forcing a reformatting.
you have the mod at your finger tips without the inconvenience of downloading the free game again.
--------------
as long as its not 29.99 i cant see EA making a fuss. they would spend more on lawyers than they would ever make back if its just a packaging service
another option is to make it a quarterly subscription service?

If you want backup files, why dont you just... like... download the mod, copy the files on a disk and then install it? But well...

Extract of BF2 EULA:
You may include materials created with the Tools & Materials on your personal noncommercial website for the noncommercial benefit of the fan community for EA's products and provided that if you do so, you must also post the following notice on your site on the same web page(s) where those materials are located: "This site is not endorsed by or affiliated with Electronic Arts, or its licensors. Trademarks are the property of their respective owners. Game content and materials copyright Electronic Arts Inc. and its licensors. All Rights Reserved." You will not represent that your site is endorsed or approved by or affiliated with EA or our licensors or that any other content on your site is endorsed or approved by or affiliated with EA or our licensors.
So I think any profitable sale (even in the form of a "donation") would be highly frowned upon by EA.

Correct. That would count as making profit off BF2, and that is illegal, as has been said many times now. Thread closed for that reason.
