hello everyone :)
how r ya'll doin ?

i was playing in Muttrah the other day and i was the gunner in a cobra for 30 minutes untill i kicked for team killing , i kepy on shooting infantry which looked like enemy and then they turned out to be friendly and the people punished me ! so my question is how the hell can we know the difference between enemy and friendly units ?! its just not possible from such altitude :S

im sure most of u played COD4 , and this mission were u play in the AC-130 Specture Gunship , u can see ur friendly units with a flashing stroke , and from what i heard the army has the same thing in real life ! so is that possible to do in PR ?

You have to use the minimap and normal one. I think that´s the only way to be sure.

i havnt had the problem before. Before i go on an attack i look at my map to see the intensions of squads. wether they be advancing or being pushed back etc.

besides the minimap the best thing would probably be if one could get intel from the CO about any activity in the area one is about to light up.

So you were at altitude in an attack chopper. Attack choppers don't hover 2 kilometres above the earth's surface looking for enemy to kill. They hide down in the weeds and probably don't have the same problem trying to identify the enemy that you report. If it wasn't for the limitations of the BF2 engine, attack choppers would be visible at almost any height and therefore a lot easier to shoot down.

That's actually exactly what attack choppers do.

What i usually do is just looking at the map see if theres friendly's around there. And when there are friendlys you need to be careful not to hit your own team.

When the enemy is too close i usually dont attack at all. Too much risk.

In real life you wouldn't indiscriminately engage infantry if you weren't able to positively identify it as enemy. Even in real life if a chopper has visual on enemy he might not be able to clearly identify them. At least in PR you have the ability to see every single friendly infantryman on map, and you don't need to call command to tell you that there's noone there (and then find out that there was, anyway).

who told u this?
in real life a cobra would be very high unseeable by the human eye...theres a reason we have really good optics.

A piece of advice,if you are the squad leader gunning(u should be ) put markers on FRIENDLY troops in chaotic places, b4 your attack run so u dont hit them accidentally. Also keep friendlies checked since they are not static meshes and probably will be on the move.

well bullet rush you got ur answer, always, ALWAYS check map for friendly location. That goes for tanks and any other vehicle you gun on, even when shooting, always consult your map. As SL it is the only way to really know whats going on since our comms are VERY limited.

Aside from that your pilot should be SL or should be communicating to SL for you if you cant, to ID targets. Or work wth commander best.

I dont like to go out and just find something to shoot at. I go where im needed. That is the best way to utilize a cobra.

Ah, yes. You would not be able to see easily with the human eye as the range for hellfire is around 8 km and the range on a 30mm is somewhere around 2-3 km at extreme range (although I am only guessing. please correct me if I am wrong). However if you are 500 - 1000 m up in the air in a conventional war you will die a very quick death from SAMs, enemy aircraft and other such things. You stay low but at the extreme edge of your range to stay away from such nasty things. Obviously in places like Afghanistan and Iraq where the nastiest thing you have to worry about is an SA7, Stinger or SU 23-2 then you should start to orbit far above the earth's surface where it is harder for them to hit you. But high altitude in a conventional war = certain death.

And get a missile from one of these for your trouble:

There is a reason why you see Apache's sitting behind tree's.

use the minimap and if youre supplying close air support get the friendlies to pop their factions smoke and sit near it
