Maps, fire support, and commanders

Although the current map is nice, I think that changing it from its unrealistic display with moving dots and move markers to a simple map of the terrain would help facilitate the game play elements that this mod seems to seek. Lone wolfing would become extremely difficult if not impossible, it would slow down squads and make them much less able to self-direct, which in turn gives the commander a greater need on the battlefield. People would have to spend more time moving stealthy and making sure to maintain battlefield awareness and less charging to a giant yellow arrow. It would help if the commander chat was turned into a sl and commander chat were leaders could exchange info and locations to help support one another. It could also be designed so only the command trailers have the unit location views.

The current off map support is devastating but rarely used as their is rarely a commander to use it. It could be redesigned to allowed it to play a more integral part of the fight. The commander could have three types, mortar, heavy guns or air support. It could be designed so the commander can drop 3 mortar rounds every 5 mins, 5 every 10, and 10 rounds every 30 min, and a special round like willy p once in a long while. The mortars being significantly weaker then those used by the insurgents. The heavy artillery could follow a similar curve but one that is drawn out over greater time. Air support would include the JDAM, but it could also include laser guided bombs, and laser guided missiles of the aircraft. The obvious unattractive side is that this would probably mean the removal of the fixed wing aircraft from P.R. If the # of rounds isn't a fitting way, you could also have varying areas affected, or varying lengths of barrages. This coupled with the new map system would create a very enticing commander experience. Think of being a commander on a hill, a squad radios saying they need fire support in G2 kp4, you pull out your radio, right click and then press T select Mortar strike and the appropriate effect, then bring up the map and place it were they need it. I'm not sure how much of this is possible, but this would help get people to play the commander role and build a more cohesive team.

Sounds like another thread that was made on removing the player icons on the map.

The commander does have several types of arty in his command. Mortars, JDAM and heavy Arty. There all not on one map but would just be too overpowering. The commander is needed enough already, commanding squads and trying to overcome an opposing commander and team arnt easy. He is always working even if still in a box. :p

I understand the fear of an uber commander, but as it is now, the commander is a position that is filled by people rising to the occasion, in my experience its a rare occurrence when dealing with something so anonymous as the interweb. There is legitimate times forces should have heavy fire support, Operation Barracuda for example. Are we to believe a group of Marines are going to assault a fortified island without some form of fire support?
