OK firstly, Yes I used the search tool and I typed, "3D Sights". So if you have another search word to use please let me know and im sorry for reposting if I did. But onto the topic. I saw the "This is my rifle" topic by our Miracle Modeler Chuc, and I would like to tell him the old "I see wut you did thar..". The M4 Aimpoint is 3D if im not wrong. You have gotten rid of the reflection and put a red dot on a see-through lens in the scope so now it still is useful AND 3D. If I am wrong then this is my solution.

Make the Aimpoint lens part see-through like vanilla (instead of the reflection of the sun and that brown background), then place a red-dot in the middle of the see-through lens. Then do what you did for the iron-sights, and make them 3D. Do this with all the Aimpoints of whatever. Therefore all sights are 3D or take up the whole screen like most games do for Scopes anyways.

Anyways, great job on the 3D sights anyways and exert your best effort to make Project reality greater than it is today. We the community shall cheer you on!

I'm an animator and texture artist, not a modeller ;)

Just wrt your question, the env maps as far as we've looked into it, cannot be turned off when zoomed in, so if we were to have an env map that produces that beautiful reflection on the lod0 when zoomed out, it will remain the same even when zoomed in, thus preventing any clear distinct view. Also we're not even sure we can tamper with env map opacity.
