Stay cautious, don't run in too fast, join a squad and stick with them - the enemy will be less likely to shoot you first ;)
Look out for tracers and listen out for gunshots, it's odd to get used to at the start but you soon start knowing where the enemy will be.

-Can't really think of anything that increases your chances of spotting an enemy, but how you play is important. Don't run around like a crazy person, use the terrain to your advantage, move slowly and look for any movement. Who is spotted first usually depends on the actions of the players in question, from there on tactics and firepower depends on who survives. If you know where the enemy has been and the battlefield situation then you should be able to estimate you enemy's present location and take him out.

raise your moitor brightness and maybe contrast, at least on non-desert maps. washes out alien objects from the terrain gives you a better view of stuff moving in the distance.
draw distance on 100% and "geometry" at high of course.

Use your binoculars too.

If you take fire, get to cover, THEN move to a new position, then look for them.

eventually, youl get the "thousand yard stare" so to speak. youl be able to pick out the slightest movement from very far away, and youl be able to tell if its enemy or friendly. just play alot, and it will come. also use your mic, your squad members may know where that fire is coming from and they can tell you.

Thousand-yard stare - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Thousand yard stare is a bit different in meaning. It is more about stress from combat and staring off into nothing, being very detached... but yeah, you'll get better at seeing more on the screen. original BF2 is very close and in your face, but after playing PR for a time you'll start to look more around you and off in the distance

Communication with the squad is the best bet because then you have 6 pairs of eyes looking for you rather than just your own. Call enemies out and give a compass bearing, and ask your squadmembers to do the same. Sticking together is your best bet for surviving contact. BUT dont bunch up ;)

can't even explain how i do it anymore, i haven't played bf2 for like 1½ year now it just seems surreal when playing bf2, i'm just so used to PR now that it's just business as usual even though other players are like wtf when they play the game.

it's a very weird feeling sometimes when you realise how different PR is from everything else and you haven't seen the changes in the same way because i have been here since .4/.5
