I've been playing this game for over a year, and I've never seen them used, but I've seen YouTube videos. Were they taken out in a patch? If not how would you use them?

fastropes are impossible in bf2 (in the proper sense), its actually a inside joke in PR community cause its posted about ALOT

Then what about the YouTube videos?

fake or some 1 throwing a rope out of the back and going down VERY slow and only possible with merlin.

You probably found videos of people throwing grappling hooks out the back or sides of a Merlin.


Edit: I love how three people posted the same thing within seconds of eachother.

If only they had fast ropes, that'd be so badass. In the next patch they should add fast ropes or a hook that you could throw your grapple through, at least in the Merlin.

as previously said by all those above me, its hardcoded... therefore not possible with the bf2 engine

They won't be adding fastropes in any patch. Fastropes are not only useless ingame, as they are slower than just landing, but also hardcoded. By "hardcoded," I mean it is impossible to do within the BF2 engine. Absolutely impossible. The devs have tried every conceivable idea to get fastropes implemented, even some that cannot be conceived, with no success.

Throwing grappling ropes out the back of a Merlin, as you can see in the video you found, is slower than simply landing, and leaves the Merlin incredibly vulnerable to helicopter-crushing small arms fire (because not only is it high up in the air, but is also completely still). Plus, it takes time for a pilot to get the Merlin perfectly still so people can hop out in the back and throw ropes down without falling out or being "run over" by the Merlin.

AND, as an added bonus, you have to have someone in the helicopter with a Spec Ops kit for a grapple. The Spec Ops kit would be much more useful with a sniper (spotting) or blowing up bridges/ambushing.

I say the same about the ninja and zombie kits.. =/

Fastropes will never be in the game unless someone can code something up. If you would like to know more search the site for many...MANY threads about it.
