Destroy the crates, or not?

When setting up firebases, the rule of thumb seems to be that you destroy one of the crates so that the enemy can't set up a firebase in the exact same spot after overrunning yours. Some people don't always do it, though.
So, is it really a good idea? On one hand, you don't want an enemy to have it easy and set up a FB in place of yours if it gets overrun either through you getting defeated or through negligence. On the other hand, if your firebase is in a defensive position, having more ammo helps the various heavy weapons that are likely to stick around. In fact, when defending, it would seem a good idea to have as many ammo crates as you could possibly get, so that you don't run low on supplies and get overrun (think river fort in Seven Gates).
On top of that, on maps with helicopters, destroying just one crate means that a single helicopter can enable the enemy to make a firebase in the same spot just the same.
So, thoughts?
