BF2 1.5 Patch due out early 2009

Here is another update on the upcoming patch. This a concise version of a Total Battlefield interview with DICE in Sweden:

The map, the name not yet released, accompanying the Patch 1.5 is designed to be intense like Karkand, but huge in a Chinese setting. DICE is putting the finishing touches on the BF2 1.5 Patch Beta which is due out early this next year.

Aerial combat between the J10 and the F35 is being balanced by the reducing the turning ability of the J10. BF2 server security and stability are being enhanced and a new account verification process to reduce name/ID spoofing will be included in the Patch. In addition, the developers are closing off some of the hacks to employ improper commander assets.

DICE is always looking to push the limits in game developing. One example is Battlefield’s 64 player limit which is still one of the largest player counts on FPS servers. The minimum specifications required for a computer system to successfully run a video game will always be increasing. We want to make sure as many people as possible get to experience and enjoy our games. Our next release will not be at Battlefield 2 minimum specification levels, but it also won’t demand the highest-end machine on the market either.

DICE is not ruling out a future release with a World War I, World War II, Korean War, or Vietnam War theme. They are looking at the conflict with the biggest appeal to their core players. They "try to listen to their players..." PC gaming and Battlefield are a big part of DICE's history and they intend to "remain faithful to the roots of Battlefield."

There are new features planned for future releases which include new first person animation and destructible scenery. Typically, first person views are camera pivots. In Mirror Edge by DICE, they used a more organic/natural movements.

The interviewer from Total Battlefield phrased a questioned specifically mentioning Sir Community, Project Reality, and Forgotten Hope asking of their impact on the Battlefield series. DICE responded, "The modding community has been a massive boost to Battlefield ove the years ..." Battlefield 2142 included content from modders one of which was Sir Community. "The modding community is an area we would like to support more in the future."

Why dont they help out the modders if they love them so much eh?

i still don't get it why game makers dont make there games extremely moddable, they don't lose anything.. still have to buy the original game, if anything they make more... they get respect from the players for helping community and they get more people buying the game for the mods? or am i missing something?

i dunno, i'm kinda nervous, simply because of there bad history with patching games, and a lot of that bad history being with bf2 of course but, it sounds stupid i know but, the way bf2 is at the moment i'm happy with it. I don't know about anyone else, sure id like another patch if it would help the modders in any way but i'm comfortable with the current patch. (please remember also that this is my own opinion so i hope i don't upset anyone <3)

Also i don't understand why they don't bring out a few maps every now and then or map packs. I would be happy just with that.

Sorry for the raging if it seems like that i just hate the fact that when they say stuff like "we will try to listen to the players more" or something on the lines of this, that they could listen to a person new to the game who might think "i don't like the damage on the Grenade Launcher so i want it reduced, and of course it wont be just one person to say something like this it could be in the 10's/100's. Yes listening to the battlefield2 community is great but they should find a way to know how long the person has been playing. I know this will never happen but it annoys me sometime when going on various EA forums and see players posting ridiculous ideas that can be changed in the next patch.

Like i said this is just my personal opinion so i hope i don't upset anyone <3

Sorry for the lengthy post :(

Nothing important will happen in the next patch. Some bugfixing, some balancing, mainly anti-cheat. And a map that looks like Sunset City's central city with water instead of streets and a flag on every single building.

Actually, not even sunset city. More like the village from Qinling - but wet.

I'm just hoping it doesn't mess up .85's fastropes.

If they do, they will be a banner of defiance to all who stay with 1.41. Remember, they may take our jet turn speed, but they'll never take our fastropes.

Hopefully then new patch will help out modders, but if all else fails, we should be able to stay on 1.41, or would EA force the login to be done with an updated 1.5 client?

hopefully they will take out that Mine Invisibility bug.

I would like to see a World War One Battlefield Game, as I feel it is something that seriously lacks, there are plenty of WWII, Call of Duty, Call of Duty 2, BF1942, Company of Heroes, Medal of Honour etc... same with modern warfare. Though I would like to see WWI and Korea, as they were very important conflicts. WWII started because of WWI

Oh well lets wait and see.

I was about to post saying "How little fun would it be to get constantly shelled, face an endless wave of enemies and have little or no chance of lasting more than 30 seconds once combat starts?".

And then I realised that I such a game exists already and that I played it for several months before I discovered Project Reality - vanilla BF2, anyone?

Yes. For one usually it isn't the developers who make modding difficult, its the publisher who isn't interested in quality as much as sales and pushing the product out the door during one of the important sales seasons.

Any real developer is going to want communities to mod the **** out of a game if it means the longevity of it. The only real exception I can think of is Oleg Maddox and his obsessive need to control all aspects of IL-2 except for maybe the skins you put on your airplane.

That said for publishers games are like music. Think of developers as the musicians, the ones being pushed around by the executives. They just want you to buy it and then buy the next one. If we're all sucked into modding BF2 we might not buy the next one. Its like... engineering competition with their own money. Thats how they see it anyway probably.

Also theres gonna be an ideological part to it. Corporations protect patents like they're their children. The popular rise of the concept of Intellectual Property has only made this worse and of course the idea came about largely to do with computers and software. Have you ever read a EULA lately? We don't own the games we play. We're just buying a license to play them. I find the notion detestable, especially for $50 or $60+ a pop, but thats how it is.

Why would a publisher let us mod a game into something else when they can just do some light programming, make a few more maps, and release it as a pay-for expansion pack? These people aren't interested in community, quality, or even ACTUALLY making a revolutionary game (though they'll market every release as one). They just want a buck and Blacksand is just another competitor, one they can easily crush or diminish by withholding the SDK.

Its all so stupid but welcome to the corporate mind set. Don't give anything away for free.

i just hope they solve all the BS punkbuster driver, handshaking, and other errors. Of course, PB would have to be forced to do all that but there isnt anyone that is better but DICE to support that.

That sounds like PR to me. But I guess my la-la land of Garry's Mod is a more peaceful place.
