Does anyone here know how to convert Google Earth height data to a heightmap?

This is about what I did but the harder way..really hard.

its a ok method to get a good "base" terrain if you want to base a map off a r/l location BUT it requires a lot of work onto of the base to get fine terrain detail in.

i tried that but coldnt locate any info.

if your after grey scale hieght map data check out the USGS site specifically the usgs seemless viewer. you can view anywhere in the world and they have Dems. (digital elivation maps) available for dowload.

Couldn't download any files from the servers (page not found - I mean with the Google earth plugin). And the heightmap preview seemed quite sparse in detail. Isn't there any way to export height data that is already in Google earth, it seems much more detailed (or is it only the preview that lacks data)?

that's what I used thou only used the part of getting the heightdata from that tut, rest I did with photoshop and my other tools.

i had the same issue no files found.

I got it working. At SRTM3 plugin first choose global grid you want to use to see Elevation preview. Now zoom in and you can see smaller parts of the grid which have a small square icon in center of area. Choose one and you can download data from that part of grid. Everything else beyond that is explained well in the tutorials.
