Parachute off Buildings???

Hi, i think its stupid how a spec op can jump off buildings and flare his parachute just before hitting the ground.

Instead i think the parachute should flare ONLY after a few secs of falling. The parachute would flare from huge heights (like out a plane) but wouldnt flare in time to jump off buildings.

What are your thoughts??

With the chutes they use, (rectagular shaped, i think thier called parafoil) they are very manuverable, so controlling it is easyier, but yes i agree with your thinking.

Good thinking, something like a 4 second delay even would fix this issue.

4sec's make sence.but auto open naa spec-ops are trained to free-fall

Spec ops should be able to still do HALO jumps

I agree, Spec-Ops should still maintain control on when they want to their chord. The time it takes for the para to become active should be longer and the para should take a bit longer to slow down to prevent the 1ft off the ground parajump thing.

the whole problem with parachutes can be pinpointed to a couple of things. first, correct me if i'm wrong, but freefalling bodies don't accelerate, they simply fall at a constant speed. in reality:
Free-falling objects are in a state of acceleration. Specifically, they are accelerating at a rate of approximately 10 m/s/s. This is to say that the velocity of a free-falling object is changing by approximately 10 m/s every second. If dropped from a position of rest, the object will be traveling approximately 10 m/s at the end of the first second, approximately 20 m/s at the end of the second second, approximately 30 m/s at the end of the third second, etc. Thus, the velocity of a free-falling object which has been dropped from a position of rest is dependent upon the time for which it has fallen. The formula for determining the velocity of a falling object after a time of t seconds is
vf = g * t

where g is the acceleration of gravity. An approximate value for g on Earth is 10 m/s/s; more exactly, its value is 9.8 m/s/s. The above equation can be used to calculate the velocity of the object after any given amount of time when dropped from rest. Example calculations for the velocity of a free-falling object after six and eight seconds are shown below.
another factor is that the faster the falling body, the quicker the parachute is likely to open.

jumping off of a building ingame, if the physics of freefall were in place, would indicate that the body hasn't even come close to terminal velocity. infact, relatively speaking, the falling body should be pretty slow. and because of this, the likelyhood of a parachute opening is low.

but because, if my assumption is correct, flat rate of speed of freefall (which ingame is pretty fast), the parachute opens without any problems. now, if it were even possible to code physics that come close to real life, and coding the parachute deploying in accordence to this, then maybe, we could have realistic parachutes ingame. but as i see it, that isn't going to happen.

so what do we do? take out parachutes completely? leave 'em in as they are for all or a specific class? change the deployment rate?

either way, a decision has to be made and we need to all be satisfied with it. because the likelyhood of something realistic to take place is probably not going to happen.

How about parachutes act as a "weapon?" (so you can only use them once). They would only be able to slow your body to a safe speed after you've fallen a certain distance (20, 30 meters, maybe?)

Parachutes are lauched as a weapon.

But are they stored as a weapon?

In Joint Operations you can only use your parachute once until you get to an armory and re-arm again. They open automatically though, so it's kind of annoying when they open randomly from a jump you would have survived easily without it and then you gotta go get another one...

*cough cough* joint operations had the sweetest sniping system set up :-D

I think you should be able to use it more than once, and guide yourself once falling, but jumping off 10ft buildings etc. is just stupid.

Let me explain a little better. I think that you should not be able to "Open" the chute for the first 4 seconds of freefall. That should eliminate the problem.

Ya its annoying in BF1942 like when you hit 9 as your feet come in contact with the ground and you just "stop" and run like you were never in the air.
