Some assorted questions to the Devs

First off, I’d like to congratulate the PR team for making such an excellent mod. It gets exponentially better each release.
I have a few questions for the Devs, though it would be great to hear the opinions/knowledge of the community as well. With .85 so close, there is a good chance that some of these questions will be answered, but I figured I might as well ask regardless.

Ok, to start, when will .85 be released? Nah, just playing...

My first few questions are military related. Maybe Eddie can answer these.
1. Does any U.S. branch still use the Chinook? If so, will there be a possibility of seeing that sexy looking Chinook modeled a while back on any U.S. map?

2. Are the gunner’s sights in attack helicopters black and white? I have heard that they are actually in color, yet the footage they produce is in black and white. If they are, why are the sights in the PR’s helicopters black and white?

3. Is the G3’s “kick” realistically portrayed in-game?? I know that the G3 uses a high caliber, and that the recoil and kick is substantial, but is the way we “feel” it in-game exaggerated? I wouldn’t know, having no experience in the matter, but it does seem like it is a bit intense.

That aside, I’d now like to ask some game related questions.
1. There was a big buzz about the Israeli faction a while back, when we saw those animations. That buzz kind of died down. Can we expect to see the Israelis in the upcoming release? .9?

2. While we are going to see a new community-made faction soon, how about community made maps? I know that, in essence, every map is a “community” made map. I mean, hell, Kill Pirate and CodeRed did it, and exceptionally. However, we also have such exceptional maps such as Wuzai (sp?) and Yabil Oilfields (again, sp?) How much interest is there on maps made by non-Devs?

3. The one “experimental” game mode, which I, for the love of me, cannot remember the name, has not really been played much up to this point. Can we expect to see a revamped game mode in the future releases, or at least more incentive to play it?

4. I understand that it takes a long time to model, animate, code, and test weapons, vehicles, and the rest. However, I do have a question about some weapons. First, the L22 (a basically compact SA80 issued to British crewmen.)
Image
Are there any plans to put in a L22 in the future? Meanwhile, are there any plans for new Marine vehicles, such as that one large amphibious APC (which I, again, do not know the name of)?

5. The new .50 cals for the Western factions are beautiful. Are there any plans to revamp the heavy machine guns for the MEC or the PLA?

6. With PR becoming progressively more realistic and less forgiving, I would like to know how the Devs feel about progressing from here. While someone must realize that they are about to enter a relatively realistic game play setting when they play PR, it is still a game. To what extent to the Devs feel that realism is necessary? Do the Devs want to preserve some of the “gamey” aspect of the BF2 engine? Can we expect progressively more realism, or will it eventually level off in a balance of realism and “fun”. (I know that fun is up to interpretation, so try to answer the best you can)

7. We are only one major release away from expecting v1.0. Do the Devs know where they want to go for that ultimate goal? Are there any major plans or expectations, or have you already put in what you really want in, and are now simply adding new maps, fixing bugs, and addressing concerns?

8. There has been talk about a new sort of asymmetry to maps. How much do the Devs plan to implement the realism of “unfairness” to the game? It can be argued which tank is better, and what weapon shoots straighter, yet some things can be generally accepted. A T-72 will lose to an Abrams, a BRDM will loose to a Warrior. What can we expect to see? How so?

9. Do the Devs intend on making larger maps, smaller maps, or a combo of both? Is there more renewed focus on infantry, combined arms, or asset warfare?

10. While it was hyped for a bit, it kind of disappeared. I’m talking about the Harrier. Any plans for it? Will we maybe see it in the future, or has it long since died? (Mind you, both the Brits and the US marines use the Harrier)

[EDIT] Forgot to add =P 11. 3D Iron Sights. They are incredible, and seemingly added with ease. Why did it take 2 years for us to make such an innovative addition to the entire game? How easy was it to do? Where did you learn to do it?

I know that many of these questions might not be able to be answered, and some might have many opinions. I tried to do as much backround research and searching as I could, so please don’t gripe at me about that.

Thanks, and keep up the amazing work!
~Cody

im not a dev but i can answer a few i think

1. yes, the US army still uses the chinook, quite extensivelly i might add. especially in afghanistan. i think all it would take would be maybe a re-skin to give them to the army faction.
2. every video ive ever seen of gun cams from choppers has either been black and white or greenish thermal cams. thats not to say color gun cams arent out there, but ive personally never seen it except for some israeli bomb cam videos.
4. if your talking about the british tracked vehicle which i also do not know the name of, its not possible with the bf2 engine due to it being in segments.
10. the harrier is in the kashan training map, and it looks pretty well complete from what i can tell..

Number 4 was asked about a weapon to be used by British crewman, not any kind of vehicle :P

That said, I wouldnt know, Id assume its all up to finding someone willing to model it. I dont think its a terribly high priority, but you never know.

Some really good "interview" questions here

General Questions

1. US still uses the Chinoook, so dont count it out for receiving maps at some point, I would say

2. I dont know about the recorded footage being different from the actual "seen" footage by the gunner so I cant comment :P

3. I dont know :P

Gameplay Questions

1. You be better off asking the IDF creators themselves :P

2. Community made maps make PR go 'round. Myself, Codered, Pirate, and countless others started work for PR through community maps. Thats how you become a DEV for mapping, really... That being said, I cant[or wont] tell you what maps are being put into PR from the community or arent ;)

3. Command and Control? I dont know, sorry :)

4. See above answer[beginning of post]

5. Would be nice

6. Thoug I honestly cant give specifics, Id say: The DEVs are always struggling for the most realistic game they can offer, but at the end of the day, its just a game. And even then, that doesnt make everyone simply agree on whats enough for a realism "game". Look at deviation, some LOVE it, some HATE it. Some say its a logical fix to a gamey problem, some still cry for its removal. I think its safe to say that the DEV team will simply discuss ways to make the PR experience more visceral and real, while always remembering that at the end of the day, people need to WANT to play this game. Including the DEVs themselves. They wont just slap something in because its realistic. If it doesnt work, it doesnt work ;)

7. Scary thought. I personally hope that 1.0 is nothing but a number and that work is continued on PR like normal :)

8. Not sure :P The balance issue is sometimes a difficult one. INS mode is a good start at ironing out what we can and cannot do, and because of this, is still WIP

9. I think the focus is on larger maps, at least not of the smallest variety anymore, but there are still exceptions. Fallujah is a small map, but it has a very clear focus and looks amazing. Itll be great as an infantry battle and for scrims etc. So, personally, I think the shift has gone to larger maps, at least larger than bf2, however, thats not saying they ALL will be... Mappers will still make things that they want to see in game ;)

10. I think its just had some problem, but dont quote me. Itll be in when its ready but thats really all I, personally, can add, as I simply just dont really know :)

3D iron sights... heh, I agree. I once paused a SP vBF2 round as a was pulling up my mp5, when it paused, it looked much like it does for the mp5/g3 3d sights now. I remember wishing back then that vBF2 had used those :)

Either way, its here now and its here to stay :) SO rejoice!

Sorry, I wasnt too helpful but at least you got a little bit more insight into some things. I wasnt about to give anything away, but a lot of your questions just relied on what is a priority[the L22 for example, sure it COULD get done, but that means another, possibly more important, weapons would need to be modelled later and not now]

P.S. None of those ;) are meant to mean anything similar to the DEV wink. Those are simply "I'm sorry, I dont know" winks :P

Actually, I was thinking of Command and Conquer, yet now that you mention it, I do remember some scenario-esque gameplay being mentioned before.

Thanks Okita for your swift and informative answers.

Any more answers, opinions, etc. out there?

3D irons were not possible and or appealing unless we had an animator.

4. The current USMC amphibious vehicle is the AAV-7, unless you are talking about the hovercraft (LCAC) in which case that is a USN vessel. There is a new amphibious assault vehicle in the works, but it is not yet in service with the USMC.

On that note, my hope is that they can get one of the other USMC heavy lift helicopters into the game and let the huey take more of a role like a littlebird does for the US Army (USMC does not use LBs) and let something like the CH-46/CH-53/V-22 do the crate/cargo role.

As for the AAV-7 I think one of the main things keeping it out of the game is that it's main armament is the Mk19 belt fed grenade launcher which might lead to 'grenade spam' but this is just my thought. If I could model one I would...

Given that its in with the L22 question, i'd guess he was talking about the Royal Marine's Viking, which as has been said can be implimented due to it being articulated.

I do not know too much about the real life ones, because few can see them and those who can probably can´t say. There are a few screens around, but few. And imagine the Z-10/havok... None available at all from what I can find, or very rare ones.

In any case, expect some nicer ones for 0.85 some colour, some B/W, while not all 100% realistic, thats impossible, at least its something different and maybe more fun.
