I need some help before I give up on this S*IT.
First I could not patch BF2 to version 1.4 because the "installer Folder could not be found". I found a solution that required me going to the REGEDIT and alter some files.
Patch 1.4 installed GREAT!
WRong...Now when I start BF2 it crashes to Desktop. I can't find a solution.

I REALLY want to play Project Reality but this is really making me lose my desire.

Please help.

Ok, I had a good day so let's try again:
- What OS do you use?
- What are your hardware specs? (GPU, CPU, RAM)
- Desktop screen resolution / ingame screen resolution
- like Nicko asked: BF2 v1.41 patch?
- Punkbuster up-to-date?
- Do you connect via PR.exe or BF2.exe?
- At what point exactly do you CTD? Directly after hitting the PR.exe?
- Black Screen and CTD or frozen screen?
- etc.

EDIT: Maybe a MOD could move this thread to the ssupport forum? Thx.
And we need a Sticky for CTD solutions (or haven't I seen it if we got one?)

iag48 I'm sorry to hear that your having these problem but maybe posting more of what type of a computer you have and what type of operation system you have could help us help you I hope someone less can help you.

It's your lucky day with me, I am in a quite good mood to help
And because I know how to get/look for some informations by myself, I found out that you have a "gateway Fx p7811" notebook, right?

So my GUESS is:
Your notebook has a max resolution of 1920x1200, but you just installed BF2 and PR with standard settings and didn't change it, therefore the CTD appears.
If so, then what to do:
Open the properties of your PR.exe shortcut (right click on it -> properties), then make sure it looks like this (the bold ones are the important): "xxxx\Battlefield 2\mods\pr\pr.exe" +modPath mods/pr +menu 1 +widescreen 1 +szx 1920 +szy 1200
hit OK
What it does: It starts PR with the screen resolution of 1920x1200 (If you want another resolution change the value to a respective 16:10 format resolution).

To play more convenient on a 16:10 resolution get the Widescreenfixer, but READ and UNDERSTAND first before you use it

If this all doesn't help, I'll wait for more infos from you or maybe another one has a solution...

I have a fx p 7811 laptop with vista 64. I installed bf2 and it played great. High settings high frames; works flawless.
Problem is that patch 1.4 would not install because it could not find the bf2 install folder. I googled around and found it was a common problem. I followed a solutioon which involved going to the regedit and adding a new installdir to the bf2 folder. It worked and the patch installed. But now when I run bf2 the screen goes black and it seems it's about to load but it just crashes to desktop.

I cancelled he PR download because it was taking too long . So I don't have it installed. I need to be able to run bf2 v1.4 first.

ON BF.EXE RIGHT CLIK, COMPATIBILITY, RUN AS COMP. TO WINDOWS XP SP2, RUN AS ADMIN =) that would also help.

Yep, try like Hotrod525 said or look at the Supportfroum, there you find some sticky threads regarding Vista, including the "Bf2 folder does not exist" problem. Sometimes a small look at the right forum helps

This is my last attempt to get this game working. I basically bought this Gateway Fx P-7811 to play this game, therefore if I can't get it to work I'm selling this thing.

Well that patch 1.4 does not work. I had to alter the regedit just for it to install. I was playing vBF2 for a few hours when all of a sudden I notice on the BF2 option screen that it was still 1.0.2442 (or something like that). So basically it installed but it didn't> .

I uninstalled everything and re installed bf2 WITHOUT patching it. I then proceeded to install PR 8 COre and Levels. When I click on the PR shortcut the game attempts to start and I get an error saying:
StaticMesh.fx(2):error X1507:failed to open source file:'mods/xpack/shaders/datatypes.fx'

I read and read and searched and read through all the stickies to no avail.
I run it as admin, I enable the xp2 compatibility (which crashes vBF2). My PR shortcut is correct.

I checked the Mods/xpack/ folder and its empty. Is there suppose to be something there? the error says it cannot open shaders and datatypes.fx. I think theres suppose to be something there.....

You definitely need the BF2 v1.41 patch, but as I am MAC user and only have a PC with XP for some games, apps and business stuff I can't tell you if theres something to beware of with vista and the patch.

Maybe someone with knowledge about vista who can tell iag48 how to install the patch properly? Would be a sad thing to loose a PR fan who was willing to buy a machine for this and can't play...

I love my black macbook for that reason. Everything just works. Well....can't say much about games since its too weak to run. I must say I have also been playing LEFT 4 Dead fully maxed out on this Fx. Great game.

I'm just completely disappointed. I really wanted to play this and ARMA and both F*cked me over. Arma gives me some "shader" error when I try to start it up. And BF2..well you know already.

Just installed 1.41 AGAIN, had to alter the REGEDIT. Once again...after installing 1.41, vBF2 crashes to desktop whenever I attempt to run it. Black screen for a second and CTD. I clicked on PR.exe and CTD.

Thats why i rather not install 1.41. At least without it I can play crappy vBF2 online.

Maybe you don't have to REGEDIT, but rather install the patch as Administrator? ... Just a guess

iag49, change the startup shortcut to have +fullscreen 1 to +fullscreen 0; at this point it should give you an error when it CTDs, and that error can be googled and then you can find out what is causing it

Yeh i remember having to do something like that when i first got bf2 then the problem kinda solved itself. As for giving up..... seriously mate, keep trying, it's worth it!!!

I changed it to "0" but no error shows up. Just a flicker and back to desktop.

Uninstall everything and reinstall?

Sometimes stuff fixes itself

okay man, first reinstall bf2, and then re-download bf2 v1.41 patch, then on the 1.41 installlook at wer it says its gonna install, wat directory its guna put it in, then find wat directory ur bf2 is installed in n check that its same, if not copy n paste from main bf2 directory ususaly.....C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\Battlefield 2............okay?
