I apologize if this has been suggest before as I did some search and not really much showed up
Search:

but no thread has addressed this issue head on
Mainly for insurgency maps, add Slat (cage) armor to stryker and warrior IFV... the kind that was on the scimitar last release.
[SOURCE]
Slat armor was initially deployed with US Army Stryker AFVs operating in Iraq. The British Army deployed similar protection to augment the armor of the Warrior AIFV. Similar modifications were performed on Australian Light Armored Vehicles.
My proposal
Increase the armor on the caged sides for the vehicle against RPG or light AT hits, but a decrease in small percentage by speed/mobility.

we do in fact have a version of the scimitar with a cage on it which we used in v0.7 but the problem with it was that for some reason it was quite buggy (think it was the col mesh thou not looked into it) and it bounced off objects and made other vehicles etc go flying when it rammed them... as such, we decided to remove it from all maps that had it and just use the version without the cage, since then we have just had more important things to work on than fixing the cage on the scimitar and making new cages
EDIT: here, notice the far scimitar has a cage.

Yeah but a cage on Stryker, Warrior, Scimitar, Bradley...etc... would be cool. You known when the 0.85 will be released, you will had quite more time until you start work HARD on 0.9 =D no??

One simple qwestion: what is the advantage of cage armor, compared to normal armor and is it worth it to add it ingame?

well in real life the advantage is that the Rocket dont actually hit the vehicle but explode a little away.
adding in game would really only be cosmetic.

You could probably extend the collision mesh over the slat armor and make it take less damage than other parts of the vehicle, thereby simulating its effectiveness. On the other hand, I don't know enough about BF2 to tell you if it'd be possible to make the slat armor parts still take significant damage from KE penetrators...

Sure you can, you give the slat armour a specific material and you make it take less damage from standard HEAT/HESH rounds, but still plenty of damage from KE penetrators.
It's perfectly possible to have reasonably realistic cage armour. The problem is as Rhino said - the one we've got at the minute is slightly buggy and putting in brand new features is currently higher priority than a relatively minor update to exisiting vehicles

Well, I'm looking forward to it making a comeback, whenever the DEVs get around to fixing it.

The idea behind SLAT armor is to get armor penetrators to prematurely detonate.
