Huge, Wide Open Maps

I was thinkin about DCR and I remember this one map, dcr_bridge I think it was, that used to be my favorite. Huge, wide open, perfect for artillery and intense battles across the bridge. Basically a huge desert with a river in the middle and a bridge that goes across. I was wondering, what are your guys' opinions on maps like these? I was always wondering what that map would be like in BF2. Plus I really missed the wide open maps.

The engine could handle drawing a huge map with complete visibility and suffer little, assuming little exists in the way of under/overgrowth, buildings and other objects.

So are there any plans on creating a map with huge openness for some good old fashioned conventional battlefield warfare in the future?

This talk about big open maps reminds me of how you could see for miles in BF1942 and its mods.

I guess the devs thought we'd rather want überleet FPS graphics instead of the ability to see a realistic distance.

Yeah, I was way into Joint Operations before BF2 came along and the draw distance has always bothered me a lot. The magical fog actually makes it seem more ghetto than less polished graphics would...

Want big open maps? Don't play BF2! Unless you have an uber Cray super computer farm.

I assume you mean something like this. http://www.armedassault.com/shots/aa_shot6.jpg

i have2 disagree about having big wide open maps ,, i prefer having smaller 1s like mashtuur and kaarkand cos i think u have a real battle rer without the lines being scattered around , city maps r the best because in current conflicts like iraq most shootouts are fought in tight narrow streets wer it is easy for ambush by insurgents

BF2 is a this or that game. You can have huge maps but nothing on them or small really cluttered ones but massive fog.

I find myself hoping and waiting for a game like ArmA to come along and do combined arms and huge maps justice, with acceptable fx. (sorry OFP is just too far back in time to play anymore)

the max you can do seems to be a 2km x 2km map. Any bigger and the textures ect tend to mess up from what i hear. Ive never attempted to make any map bigger than that as 1, the editor would lag while making it too much for a 2 year old to bare. 2, ive heard this stuff about it. I might attempt to make a test map on it in the futrue but till then, ill stick to what i know works.

You have to admit: it would be pretty ****ing awesome to have a massive combined arms operation over a huge open map
