Google SketchUp
I've used sketchup before, and I used to model levels in
Marathon, so I've got a
bit of experience

I'll look into Gmax, because the main thing that's kept me from trying to model is the price tag of most software

Blender and GMax are popular choices. I've used both. Blender has some good tutorials on its site. Albeit if this is for BF2 I believe there are more tools for GMax + BFEditor
