You're so right. I've been spotter for few times. It just sucks.

EDIT: only real use for spotter is covering the sniper. But the team has already failed if they're in position that needs covering.

your spotter can

guard you
heal/rearm you
talk to the commander to pass intel along while you shoot
find targets while you are shooting
and keep you company
pick up the kit if you get killed

Sniper is more than shooting, as you probs know. Sounds like you have had bad spotters is all.

but spotter Does Not need soflam, SF kit can be off doing better stuff

agreed on bullet drop - but realistic ballistics is a community wip project
agreed on lower settle time, would like it to be in a deployed mode

I have never spotted for a sniper and I rarely play sniper myself.

but I can spend entire rounds spotting for jets and helis and I have seen plenty of others doing it too, so I can't see the problem with spotting for a sniper really, I just haven't because I have never been asked too.

@redalertSF, I think the spotter mainly needs to cover the sniper when they are relocating, when they are in position he should be spotting (unless something goes wrong)

Spotting is not boring. It's not much action, yes, but sometimes I just don't feel like running around.

It isn't frustrating either. Not very dangerous anyway.

thinks of it as not a sniper team but a RECON team.

I think spotting and sniping is just as good. I take credit for whatever the sniper does, we're a team. If he takes one guy out I get just as happy as if I would have made the shot. I'm always active constantly spotting for my sniper, giving intel to CO, SL or the whole team. I just give away everything I see, something might come in handy for someone out there.

And the spotter don't always just cover/heal/spot for the sniper. Me and a friend were lying in the north east parts of Zatar Wetlands. We had been lying there for 20min and the CO hadn't done anything about a FB which we had reported of several times. We were up in the mountains and this one was out in the fields below, by a house.

We took it in our own hands and I as a spotter with the spec ops kit went down there. All sneaky sneaky as a truck passed by, placed a C4, got an adrenaline rush of a life time as my sniper spotted enemies approaching, going back slowly, up to the mountain again and "BAM!!". "Commander, enemy firebase is taken out". :D

So the sniper can cover you as you go away on some sneaky sneaky missions in case enemy FOB's are close.

usually if im a spotter for a sniper, i will also be spotting for aircraft.

rather than 'sniper teams' i go in 'recon teams'

partnering with a sniper is super fun, especially with some one you are good friends with and he/she is a good.

i would call it recon teams too, because i sometimes might take a HAT and while the sniper giving me cover I go behind lines and take out bunkers. Works really good in jabal.

anyway yeah but just spotting can get boring, you need things like c4 to keep you busy and more useful for the team.

No spec ops in 0.85, that just sucks...

+1 for a RECON Kit

Knife
Silenced Pistol
Accurized Battle rifle (M21,SVD,AR10...)
SOFLAM
only 1 Heal pack
Grapping Hook
no body armor
No Ghillie

AND that would include the removal of both the sniper and spec op kits

As a spotter you should range your snipers targets, pick up targets of priority AT, officers .50 cals and other snipers, you should provide intel to your commander. Sniping isent only shoting its knowing when to shot aswell.

It's really simple.

Spotting doesn't increase the effectiveness of the sniper, but is rollicking good fun in the same way tea parties with stuffed animals and action hero games are - make believe. Both people get a sense of accomplishment out of using hardcore military talk and reenacting their favourite movies as well as being unbearably cool and teamworky.

When ballistics (or accentuated ballistics) are implemented into PR (and sniper deviation brought under control), then the spotter will have a place and the whole thing will stop being a seriously bad joke.

There was bullet drop in vBF2. I hated it. Keep it the way it is, but make snipers harder to detect.

you haven't had a good spotter then.(or maybe never had one)

having a spotter to watch your back, get you to high locations, and automatically mark locations for you makes snipers feel like a baby.

Sniper = useless when it comes to any combat but long range. The spotter is pretty much the guy who takes care of you. I would never go out side the base without one.

to prove this, watch some videos of DB and fuzzhead on multiple occasions doing some sniping. look for romagnolo's (sp) excellent sniping in muttrah.

Also, what do all those videos have in common? You tell me..

I'd like to suggest a scout kit for the next release.
No armor
Ghilie
carbine
silenced pistol
soflam (or just binocs)
2-3 dressings
hook

he sounds like the old spec ops but i assure you this will help you get rid of lone wolf snipers.

When ever I snipe I always ask for a spotter from my squad. Usually I don't get one so I end up being a lone cow (I stay close to the flock but on my own, as opposed to the lone wolf who says "screw"). A spotter is essential for sniper survival in city battles. Too often I get snuck up on while zoomed in looking for targets.

When working with a spotter I've set some really good traps, run out into the open and let the enemy see you, then "run away" and the enemy (hoping to score a sniper kit) chases me right into my spotter's nades. I've personally assisted in the destruction of several enemy squads that way.

Its also super useful to have a spotter when you get into a sniper vs sniper situation. How many times have you been sitting there, rounds landing near you, and you just can't find where they are coming from. A spotter doubles your chance of finding the shooter before he gets you.

I completely view the sniper team as more of a recon asset than an offensive unit. I like to get off to the side and scope the battle field reporting enemy contacts, only shooting when targets of opportunity show themselves.

Next time you want to spot or if you're a sniper and need a spotter contact me and I'll gladly hook up with you.
