I searched around and I didn't seem to find any specific info in the forums on sniper deviation. If there is a thread up please point me there and if this is in the wrong place please let me know.

When you hold 3 and the sniper class breathes, what is the ideal time to shoot. I was experimenting in training and I wasn't able to see much of a difference. It appeared to be that after counting one ... two and holding sniper breath that that was the most accurate, but there were no consistent results.

What is the ideal time to shoot when breathing (in PR).


Also, are these accurate?:

Sniper:
Per shot: 8 seconds
Mouse turn: 1.6 seconds (only if rapid 180deg turn)
Walking: 8 seconds

So you have to wait 8 seconds after every shot(/or moving) for maximum accuracy?

The breathing has nothing to do with your accuracy. In .8, you reached full accuracy after remaining still for 8 seconds, so the breathing thing was just a way to know when to take your shot. The times have been changed I believe, but it might still be useful.

Now onto your question:

The sniper breathing tool is bit confusing at first, allow me to explain. The breathing tool doesn't directly affect your deviation, it is merely a tool to help you know when you have max accuracy.

The breathing time is roughly 8 seconds and once you hear the breathing stop, your deviation is settled to its max. Waiting for when your avatar holds his breath doesn't allow for steadier aim, although it would be more realistic this way. However because of the BF2 limitations, such a system can't be implemented at this time. This is why the deviation system in game has been tweaked so many times by the DEVs, as they can't create a true/realistic system to account for sway, solider fatigue, wind, humidity, etc.

So in short, your best method is to wait until the breathing fades away completely while remaining completely still (little to no mouse movement) before taking your shot.

**NOTE** Keep in mind the closer the target the less time needed to wait for a steady shot. The maximum 8 seconds is only needed for +600m targets. As the target gets closer seconds can be shaved off on the total settle time.

Now as for your second question, the times you have are approximately accurate (I only say this because I'm not sure of the EXACT times, a DEV/More experience player could confirm this for you). Although I wonder why you would be attempting a walking shot with a sniper in the first place .

The breath sound only serves a timer to tell you when deviation has reached a minimum which is 8 sec (unless it changed in 0.85). Wait 8 secs after every shot or movements. If 8 secs have passed while you are scanning with the mouse you don't have to wait before taking your shot. Insurgents will be critically wounded no matter where you hit them. If you hit soldiers in the torso once they don't go down but start bleeding out. Headshot they are dead. Best place to aim are the thighs, big target with no body armor so they are critically wounded on the spot. Then just wait for the medic Also remember: The guy with the big bagpack is the squadleader. Learn to tell friendlies at long distance. I find that the color of their vest and the shape of their gun is the most useful.

Once I started doing the above my sniping success vastly improved

Just to add to this:

BE ESPCIALLY CAREFUL WHEN VERIFYING FRIENDLIES ON INSURGENCY MAPS

With the new kit geometries, players whom pick up kits from the other team not only get the kit loadout....but their helmets and even chest camo.

This makes sniping a tad harder as you have to make sure it's not a friendly with an INSURGENT kit....or vice versa.

WASD Movement: 8 seconds to minimum deviation
Per shot: 4 seconds to minimum deviation
Mouse Movement: Almost non-existent

Minimum deviation for all Sniper Rifles essentially means that you will only need to account for the drop of the projectile.

how much dose stance effect deviation?

If you have a normal rifle and you have...

1. Sighted in
2. Not moved for 5 seconds*
3. Are pacing your shots with two second intervals

...then your will round will impact within this distance from where you've aimed the rifle at a target 200m way....

Standing: 74cm
Crouch: 51cm
Prone: 46cm

*Waiting five seconds would only be necessary when aiming at long range targets. Up to 200m, waiting this long is not necessary. Definitely not necessary if you're only trying to suppress your target.

That is only skimming the surface of what the full guide will cover....

Hi Jaymz,

I have a question regarding the deviation distance listed for rifles in CM.
Is this how the game engine works, that regardless your distance to the target, the deviation in CM is applied? Or is this deviation in CM based upon a specific distance? This is assuming of course that we stay within the 200 meter range.

Ex: I shoot a target at 150m, prone, in the optimal shooting condition, settle time, target immobile, I will observe 46cm deviation
Same situation as above but I shoot a target at 10m will the same deviation be observed, 46cm?

Also one thing that people should learn is how certain classes act in squads, i.e. medic will always be 5th in squad, behind most of them, but with one guy protecting him from the rear, longshots stay at back, LMG and specialists are always a little bit forward, and SL position depends, but he has enormous backpack so it shouldn't be hard to see him.

No, thankfully it's based in MoA. So at 100m it would be half that. I hope that clears it up for you.

- Could you clarify what MoA is please?
- Is the listed deviation numbers (above) for a 200m distance?

Minute of Arc. Deviation increases as distance increases.

Yeah... and I think that doing this, you would break some 'rules' in RL

Anyway.. I felt like a Spy from TF2 with an INS kit

I was aiming somewhere.. then I saw an INS walking behind me... He didn't realize that I was a US Army soldier HAHA

So I just turned around and put a 7.62mm bullet on his brain

Sometimes its useful in-game but.. dunno... It doesn't feels like reality..

that cant be right can it? i new to game and trying to also figue snipers out, i fired a few in my time and i can say you do not need to wait 8 secs per shot, useally takes around 3-4 secs per shot, though this a game so i not sure how realistic the game devs want it to be.

maybe someone could clarify this..

also out of interest in this game do you have to keep crosshare on tarket allways as in real life? or do you need to lead/ aim crosshare above or slightly left /right of target as some games tend to use this unrealistic method and wondering does this game also use this method?
