Yea, max 9 is the highest version I know that works with the necessary tools.

not fully. Max 9 is the highest fully supported version. Max 2009 etc become really buggy on export and any self respecting exporter will backport a model from max 2009 to max 9 before exporting which can leave some model bugs, for the best model you want to make the model in max 9 (or 8) then there is no issues.

I've managed to export my FAL w/ Max 2k9, but all faces were flipped, dunno if that's because it didn't had a texture or if it was a bug during the export...

Now I have to bug the bug, I'll try to export it with every face flipped, so if the exporter is flipping the faces it will flip'em into the right place!
lol, this flipped my brain up.

why does evenyone use max? Maya was used by dice! Does Maya need and export/import program to bf2?

Well i just got 3DS Max 9, and i'm trying to learn how to use it. Would it just be easier to use Maya or Gmax?

yes and no.

I've not used Pro Engineer thou I've used many CAD programs like it also from Autodesk etc but in my experiences with them, with yes its possible for the most part to be able to export to a format with the CAD program to a format that Max can read, but the big problem is, the model is a mess. It looks fine on the surface but as far as it being a game model is concerned, its unusable. This is because the methods of drawing/modelling are very different. With CAD you "model" your thing to be as accurate as possible, everything needs to be 100% correct otherwise your model/drawing is useless. With game modelling its 100% the opposite, you need to model something only to "look right", if its correct or not it dose not matter, providing it looks right and its optimized etc, its fine.

Due to the programs also working along this line, CAD programs dont give a sh*t about how many polys they are using, so when it comes to export them and import them into max, there are soo many unused polys its etc easier to make it from scratch in max than try and fix it.

I would give it a go as it might be different with Pro Eng but unlikely as if I can remember right its was built off Inventor or runs along more or less the same lines as Inventor ie, its a dimension driven cad correct?

But ehhh, if you know how to use CAD and you want to get into game modelling, I can tell you now, you basically need to relearn everything, since CAD and game modelling are soo fecking different, took me like 3 years to get my head around it :p

ok thx! good to know i thought it would be easy to learn modeling because as a mechanical engineering student i have made alot of accurate models ... damn

ye rgr, I got a distinction in CAD on my Mechanical Engineering course at collage but even after that, I found it impossible to get my head round the differences for ages, did eventually get there hehe. Would still give it a go since you might find it easy to pick up, depends on the individual as well but it took me ages to get my head around it is all :p
