Allow tanks to laser targets

in the old days i'd get 2 tanks, 1 officer, 1 engineer
now, I don't need the engineer anymore, so I bring a medic.
but I stil want to call in CAS, so I have officer.
But don't tanks have their own lasering capabilities? I imagine they do.
If you gave the Driver the ability to laser I can bring 3 tanks to the fight increasing my squad's chances of surviving and allowing more tanks to be active at any given time.

Driver has left mouse free for this. (it would work just like the attack chopper gunner)

This is a great idea Rudd. I was also tempted to suggest something like this, but with the addition of the addition of the commander position be able to hull down with the ctrl key (and possibly switch to a camera mode).

anything you can laser designate you could also just destroy with your main gun so i dont really see the point. plus do we know if tanks do this in real life?

Other tanks etc would be engaged with the main gun, however infantry in cover are harder to hit, lasering their position for an air strike works well.
I do it using the soflam atm, its a good tactic that allows my squad to engage enemies in cover.
I'm not sure of the realism of it to be perfectly honest. But in any case, if all is needed is a soflam, I'm pretty sure they could just...bring one. IRL all cuz u have 'the crewman kit' doesn't mean that your hands fall off if ur touching the designator.
The only problems I can think of, is that all the tanks will be able to see the designation? (which would actually be quite cool, but I dunno how realistic that is)

Except MBTs don't have their own laser painting equipment in real life. At best they have a LRF and an IVIS which can give accurate co-ordanence to artillary or GPS guided weapons.
There are specialised light vehicles that have proper JTAC gear which do the lasing.

What Flanker says is correct. There are specialized Fire Support Team (FiST) vehicles that have this capability. Refleks ATGM equipped tanks can designate for their own missiles, but not other platforms, as far as I know.

They're working on that for the FCS Mounted Combat System, if I recall correctly. You have been able to hand-off designate targets for laser guided artillery rounds (and artillery can be mounted on armored vehicle platforms) for several years, already, and they're working on precision guided mortar rounds.

^ not much point in that imo, 6 ppl in squad, thats 3 tanks or 2 tanks carring 2 extra ppl (usually an officer and an X) having an extra spot just means that the officer or X will sit in that instead of the 50.
though a case can be made for an extra spot in tanks for other reasons.
