Teamspeak

I can not believe how underused teamspeak is. For me it is very important to turn a so so game into a great game. Coordinating air support, getting convoys going or only attatching an infantery squad effectively to an apc squad can be done so much better with teamspeak. Yet most players do not seem to check if their favourite servers have teamspeak, or even worse, some clans make teamspeak exclusive to their members.

Mumble will not do you any good once the person you want to talk to is out of range. It is great for reducing spam on teamspeak if you do not need to radio. TS is still No.1 and mumble No.2.

Way I see it:
Mumble is your voice.
Mumble SL channel is the radio.

Mumble + VOIP = just right. I find TS to be just spammy and blah. Ideally VOIP would be fine on it's own, as additional VOIP clients just make the commander even MORE redundant.

Not true, if you follow the instructions proberly, there is both positional and forcecentered (IE, radio) Voip. Setup the channels so that SLs use forced centered and can speak to each other, while everyone else can speak in-game.

Not at all. In game you have 9 squads approximately equal to 3 Platoons = 1 Company. Now extra voip helps your Platoon coordinate together to take an objective, while the Commander deals with the one step ahead process, ordering people where and when to go, because he has the big picture. Extra VOIP not only assists, but makes the COs job that much easier and better.

-Have you tried Mumble? Because it can do basically anything Teamspeak can, and in addition it's open source so you can probably add any feature that is required. You can speak to player across the map using force center position, thereby talking to everyone in your channel. Recently on Korengal our side had all our SLs in one sub-channel so we could talk to each other across the map using force center position. In addition, the normal 3d positional audio and stuff worked worked with anyone in the parent channel. This way the SLs could communicate over any distance and still talk to anyone nearby with the normal keybind.
-And there's still a lot of options available in Mumble that we haven't even begun using yet.

Why don't we make a poll. Mumble VS. TS which is preferred by most players

Guys the thread is about teamspeak let him talk about it, no need to start an argument here.
I agree Cassius, any voip program that allows squad leaders to communicate will make the team and gameplay much better.
Everyone is excited about mumble right now because its under active development, its open source and adds the 3d positional, whereas teamspeak has not released a new version in many years, but any voice program is a good addition, whether its ts, mumble or vent.

It never plays out like that in the publics I see. In the off chance we actually have a commander, his only job is to relay VOIP from one SL to another; rubber stamp "yes" on marker placements and remove spare ones, and that's about it. Any squad-leader can hit the map / squad key and see the position of every other squad on the map, they have as much insight into "the big picture" as the commander, and if the squad leaders (and indeed, every grunt) on the TS server can inter-communicate, then he has access to NO additional information or insights than the individual grunts on the street do.
The commander's already relatively superfluous in the game, and with extra VOIP options (which, I know, are helpful for promoting teamwork and gameplay co-operation) his liaison duties are made 100% redundant.

I did not know forcecentered works that way. I thought it does the same as regular talk, but only people in your channel can hear you. In that case it makes TS really redundant. My only problem is that it slows down my computer, even the movies that play in the PR menue are laggy. Iam suspecting because my hard drive is in use all the time for buffering and what not, although it is supposed to use my ram seen as I disabled virtual ram.
Also I disagree with the commander being superfluos to the game. In my experience even on a good server despite the squads having a lot of insight, they cooperated when they happend to be in the general area, but getting a convoy going or the like takes a CO or somebody who fulfills that role on TS even if he did not actually apply.

mumble, voip plus TS anyone? perfect combination if setup correctly

If mumble can radio the way TS can we do not need TS no more, except for the fact that for some people (myself included) mumble does not run properly, slowing the system down.
But yah, if TS is underused we might get a similiar problem with mumble.

Agreed Cassius, TS is muchly underused and can turn the tides of a game on a public server.
General_J0k3r wrote:mumble, voip plus TS anyone? perfect combination if setup correctly
Too true, a lot of people mute their TS once they're on mumble but TS still has its advantages over mumble. When all 3 systems are used together, it's soo full of win.

VOIP - In-squad communication at long distances (mostly orders)
Mumble - In-suad communication at short distances, Between-squad communication
TS/Ventrilo - In-clan communication
And all fits perfect.
Think of VOIP and TS/Ventrilo as a radio and Mumble is your characters voice (with Force Center - radio too).

In mumble, go to Configure / Settings / Shortcuts and then Force Center Posistion, which will allow you to talk, where ever you are.

Yeah the only problem in mumble, I think, is that when you use the "force center position", everybody on the channel (including enemies) will hear you. It would be like those dumbasses (joke) that use the global chat to give enemy position or team oriented details.
I like hearing enemies but I think that having 1 separate channel for each team would be better (keeping the squad leader channel, which is awesome and is the “radio channel”) That way, the only reason to use the bf2 VOIP would be to speak to squadmates who are not on mumble or far on the map and to the commander. No need for ts or vent anymore.
A good trick that I read somewhere on the forums is to set your bf2 voip push to talk button to the Mumble shortcut "push to mute". That way, when you use the bf2 voip, mumble is muted and people on your squad won't hear duplicate coms.

the majority of the PR Tournament uses teamspeak.
