Suggestions for Mumble

I know we already have a thread on Mumble in the general discussion, but I thought it might be nice to have a thread dedicated to strictly conceptual stuff. So if anyone has any ideas post here (if the admins feel that this thread isn't detracting from the other, just thought for the sake of clarity it might be a good idea to keep this stuff separate). Obviously alot of these ideas will depend on just how open to modification mumble infact is, and how much of a pain in the arse they would be even if they are possible.
One thing I reckon would be pretty good is a basic reverb effect, the positional audio is awesome obviously, but I think it'd be alot more immersive if there was a bit of a sense of space beyond thing being a bit quieter then if someone's right next to you. Obviously complex things such echos are a little out of the question, but a simple effect would help out alot, and mean that you could hear far away sounds alot more clearly then current.
Another noobofthenight mentioned when we were playing yesterday is integrating a proper radio layer (something probably already in the works) with a nice realistic tinny midrange distorted sound. He also mentioned that (in the Brit army at least) radio units are worn on the right ear, so it would be cool if the radio sound would correspond to this if a radio layer can be created.

I don't agree with reverb. It may sound strange. The best thing to add would be Doppler effect but it's hard to code.
Radio layer? Yes! But only with Force Center Position PTT. Do you sound like radio when speaking to person next to you?

It would be nice if some of the most important mumble settings could be done server-sided.

I think global chat should be disabled except for the squad leaders.

Yeah, I think they're aiming to make the setting non-changeable so you don't have people abusing them.
With the radio I think it would be easy enough to double the effect, so you can hear people near you using it, but incoming radio was kept to the person hearing it in a distorted radio sounding fashion.
I don't think reverb would sound that strange, it'd just help everything blend in with the environment, that is the point of the program isn't it?

Yup, that'd be a nice addition, apart from maybe between games, it's a bit annoying hearing everyone not in game while you are too.

Yeah, I think radios would be cool, give yourself a 'frequency' to tune into (basically a channel) and you could set up nice comms that way.
Not too hard to do either, surely? Force posistion, right handside, add the radio FX (As Anrk mentioned) and then you have an effective way to talk over distance!

How's this - since Mumble knows where you are in the game how about having speech sound natural if the person talking is within hearing range, and beyond a certain distance have it switch to a 'radio' type sound, with fuzziness, tinniness (sp?), distortion etc.
What do we think?
Stu.

Well in my perfect game voice would be localized and radio could only be done by people who actually have a radio. That would be pilots crewmen officers and soldiers who survived an helicopter crash and either recovered a radio off the pilot or an enemy officer, unless that specific army equipped every soldier with an transmitter.
Oh and teamchat would only be avaiable to people who have radio, global chat to everyone to complain and harrass the admins.

I wonder why no one suggested that we mute everyone transmitting while not having a position in the game world. This is currently the most annoying thing since everyone will hear those guys... Well I suggested it now.

^ I've had to put stern words to those who use all chat so far.

I too had hoped for some reverb effect, for long dinstance mumbling.
I pictured myself at the top of the West Falluja mosque, distance and bloom on max; preaching passages of the Qur'an to mytars and slandering infidels through a megaphone.
Alas.
...mongol...

Was about to say the same, would help clear comms a lot!

If possible cut the perimeter to 20-30 meter for hearing what other say from other squads. Always on for you own squad. And a hotkey for SL to speak with eachother wherever they are.
This is for RL purpose and to cut out the spam. Because it's gonna be to much voices disturbing your concentration.
