please let us hear .50 rounds striking the hull of the chopper and 30mm rounds hitting the apc. it's so awkward (and probably unrealistic) when you just die cause you don't hear anything hitting you.

I always assumed this was a bug.. Anyways, it would be nice to hear impacts on the hull of vehicles.

This mainly stems from the occlusion added for players inside helicopters/tanks/APC's
This is required due to realism and the fact that without it, you wouldn't hear anything except the engine of your vehicle. So realism and communication both benefit greatly here. Only problem is that because it heavily filters sounds outside the vehicle, it's filtering the sound of bullets/shells impacting.
The impacts sounds for bullets vs metal are very loud. The impact sounds for 25/30mm shells vs metal are insanely loud. A possible solution is to give 50cal vs metal a louder impact sound to try and beat the occlusion.

Is there no way to reduce engine noise within the vehicle and nothing else?
Making the impact sounds even louder would seem to be pretty much the worst option, but if that's what it comes down to -- the most important thing is being able to tell when you're taking fire.

Well, it wouldn't have to be a sound if it's not possible to implement.
Maybe just some kind of visual warning?

No, definitely make them louder. Actually, can we make all collisions with bullets of higher caliber sound much louder? That would probably also get you suppressed psychologically, rather than just visually, because hearing the loudness of the bullet simply impacting nearby would definitely scare the Sh!t outta anyone.
Plus, it would fix the filtering for vehicles, as you say, Jaymz, and allow you to possibly hear the impacts within the vehicle, not just the engine.
