Radio man - (a kit that calls in artillery)

How about a new specialty kit: Radio operator or what is the military term for that?
or something like a radio for the Squadleader that he can call in Artillery/Airstrikes with?

Radio Operator (limited to 2)
-Knife
-Carbine (4x)
-Radio (1x)
-Soflam
-Smoke (2x)
-Signal Smoke(2x)
-Fielddressing (3x)

The radio would be something like this:
Image
Could be just like aimed as the insurgent cell phone, or on the map within let say 500 meters.

Radio could get 2 options:

-Mortars
10 medium shells in a wide spread area
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HqZeky1S7NA&NR=1

-Barrage
5 large shells in a small area
YouTube - World in conflict - Precision Artillery

The 2 options would be linked with an ammo link like the machine gun,
Reloading a new ''ordnance attack'' would take 5 minutes or abit more.

This is just a rought idea.

At the moment theirs a verry limited use of area attacks!
This could add a few things:

-Nice and also fun add to infantry gameplay.
-Get snipers something to shoot at
-Get more area attacks if used right thus adding assymetricall balance
-Usefull for recon teams or defending/assaulting teams.

I'd say give him a Greensmoke to mark friendly locations.

BTW: had this idea on my mind for a long time, so putted it on the forum.

What you mean with green smoke to mark friendly positions?

what does this kit bring that the squad leader doesnt?

unnecessary given the player number limitations

any extra offmap support should just be added to the current setup

The calling in artillery could be removed from the squad leader, thus requiring more teamwork than just click and wait, and now recon teams and such could bring something to the battlefield too.

Also, if added having a radio man brings you offmap support thus adding assymetrical balance, basicly the team that keeps their radio operators alive will be able to have artillery attacks.

Basicly it can allow infantry to do alot of stuff, like make fortification with radio man in it to call down artillery strikes, and recon team that call them in on enemy fortifications, and get snipers high priority targets.

And maybe if possible, the radio can talk to commander directly??

to me, this is just another soldier out of action with specific duties. i'd like it if servers in pr were 128 players but right now the squadleader is enough.

I second Hibernative.

but it would feel like im shooting a bullet, when some of the most enjoyable stuff in PR is when i ask for somthing and sombody else does it for me.

edit: plus the maths would be all wrong. give a dude a kit to run around the map, then get killed and nobody has arty. let commander keep it who doesnt get killed if hes in his box, and everybody has access to it. (providing the commander is in his box)

I suppose I look at it differently. Perhaps if this could be given to the commander position it would make it viable again.

I know I am not sure the command structure of in the field units but rather then having a 'commander' could you not use this kind of kit as a way to contact HQ? Limit it to say, one per team and only requestable by the person in the commanders position. I don't know the full blown coding aspects of it but it would manage to kill several birds with one stone.

The commander would not be shunned as it is at the moment. Anyway you look at it people are playing a game and sitting in a commanders truck, sometimes getting kicked for idle from the game.

It would require that only one of the kits exist at a time per team and unable to be stolen simply due to realistic nature. If an MEC soldier steals a US radio kit the people on the other side aren't going to listen to him... >.>

Of course a radioman kit would have very little in the way of defense. I'd say a carbine or even just a dress sidearm. Make his death worth a decent amount of tickets and the refresh to the kit pool a decent timer, (10, 20 minutes.)

The only issues I see in the coding department is can you make a single class not drop its kit or only allow the person in the 'commanders' position able to pick it up or request it.

I know people don't want a fighting commander and that might be why the command post was added but you could leave that only for the JDAM and standard commander actions but if a position is hardened while on foot he can call mortars or smaller munitions on a smaller timer making the position a little more useful and appealing for near the main base defense.

Yes its a bit of a clusterfuck my take but basically the idea itself seems to make a bit of sense and on the surface looks like it could be adapted as a way to enhance the commanders position.

I think this could workout really well if implemented correctly. Maybe connect it some how to those morter models in the dev journal? So it would take radio man and the gunner in the pit.

Locked. Please use search and the Already Suggested thread in the future.

In most Western military forces every combat troop is trained to call for fire support, but forward observers receive training in observing and adjusting indirect fire. Conventional infantry unit Radio Telephone Operators (RATELOs or RTOs) or Signalers, depending on service, are just infantrymen who are assigned to carry the unit radio and are expected to be more proficient in its use and maintenance.
