Mumble Ruining PR??

I think mumble is great. But i belive to many people like to spam mic and jack around on maps now. Mumble should help teamwork not kill the server and the fun.

I think we need to take the game serious when we use mumble or dont use it at all.

Mumble is a great tool, and you can have great rounds with it if you coordinate and play seriously. But while round after round of that is great and all, there will be times when people just want to have fun with it do something silly like have a human blob formation, or a bayonet charge, or heck, even a civil war reenactment.

Edit: Last suggestion has yet to be seen.

I take it you played that round on TCC on Muttrah v2, where all the MEC mumblers thought it would be cool to set up in the fort, right?

I know :p

Though I didn't enjoy the round either, and I was on the other side. I was actually writting up a few ban requests, to be specific. I was either being TK, alt-tabbed and browsing, or w/e most of the time, I got like 5 minutes of actual game time in the air. :|

Wait... this only happens on mumble? This is news to me...

Suggestions about mumble (IE, no forced center when not in a server), has it's own thread. THe only time I've seen people "jack around maps" using mumble was today (or yesterday I guess :P ), on the MEC fortress in Muttrah. But hey, I'd rather the entire team jack around with teamwork than go off and jack around alone.

Wait... Something tells me that sounds wrong...

Not every round has to be 100% serious. I enjoyed defending the fortress. It just sucks that the server crashed loading the next one.

We used it very well yesterday, although not that many were on it.

I can't say for certain, but I imagine that alot of troops, while acting alot more seriously while in combat, will still make the odd joke and generally have a little bit of a laugh to keep morale up as long as the combats not uber intense. That's uber uninformed speculation before anyone ironically takes that too seriously :p

We were defending the fort because it needed defense....the rest of the team was attacking....

I still believe that having one channel for each team with a channel for the squad leader as a "radio com" would greatly enhance the gameplay and the fun. Yes, I know, not the realism.

The only problem that would remain is the "force center postition" used too much by the grunts... This is a mumble problem now because we can't disable for specific channels it and it acts exactly like altspeak right now (but can't be disabled).

I was "mumbling" the other night and a couple things kinda annoyed me.

First, someone thought it would be cool to play music for everyone in the channel - I assure you that was not cool.

Secondly, when people are not in-game they feel this urge to talk with their peers about whatever -not cool as its ruining the fun and clarity of communications for everyone who is in-game.

and lastly, every time someone enters the channel they have to do "mic" checks... while not in game... of course I can hear you but I cannot hear my squad mate who is in a firefight with me...

I think there needs to be a written "Mumble PR Etiquette" while using mumble. There is a tacitly understood "proper use" of mumble but its not shared or adhered to by many.

I completely agree. Last night was probably the worst example of which.

Forced position should never be used by anyone not in the right SL channel. Support SMs, such as in a Helo squad are an exception, I believe they can be in the SL channel too.

Other wise, ALL players should be required to only use positional mumble. As for music, I don't mind if you use it positionally with consenting mumblers, but don't do it without first asking.

Finally, positional audio shouldn't be heard when not loaded into the server yet, so that people loading up don't have to hear the ingame stuff. Forced positional should still work, for obvious reasons, but don't spam it unnecessarily with "what team am I on?" You'll find out just as easily when you load up.

I am setting a mumble server for my clan and I did a lot of communications scenarios as well as playing with the acl.

I can say that there is 2 options missing in my opinion on mumble's side:

---> Auto-mute the players which arent linked to bf2.exe yet (it happens the moment they spawn) So it would prevent the player who aren't on the map yet to speak and be heard by everyone

---> Give another option to Deny/Allow "force center postion". Right now, In the ACL (permission system of mumble), you only have one options named "altspeak" which affects both "force center postion" and "alt-ptt"... so both shortcut will have the same result ingame. With the option to dissociate these 2 commands, we could set up elaborate coms like:
- everyone hear everyone positionnally but aren't allowed to "force center position"
- Squads are linked separetly, can communicate normally between their members and with everyone else, AND can use "force center position" to communicate between them only
- Squad leaders can "Alt-ptt" to speak between them like a radio com (transport team could have their squad leader refering order of transport to squad members via "force center position" depending of the position of it's vehicule).

Of course that would require joining the right channel so it would need Idiotproof instructions "or" an other option from mumble putting automatically squad members in the same channels.

I did request on sourceforge.com the option to deny/allow "force center position"

great ideas... be sure to follow through with them :)

I was an SL of one of the squads defending the Fortress on Muttrah in TCC last night, and for a while it looked like we might actually have had to fight. The South City was either in US hands or neutralized, so we had to quickly set up a .50 cal and wire. Sadly, the fight never got to us. And Rudd - please don't threaten to molest me anymore. ;-)

for the record :D

I came to the fort to meet with the SLs who were defending it and request in person (i.e. on mumble) that they get to the front line.

a couple of them had accidents in the fort  requiring a quick medic fondle to survive.

It was actually kinda funny, I walked in to the fort and tahnhauser was there, I said "Hey tahnhauser, this is rudd on ur right, can you point me to where your SL is please?"

"sure, he's up there" (different words were used...Tahnhauser didn't agree with the fort defence strategy) *points with binocs*

I shout up to tranzparent, and we had a little chat...

Tranzparent, you are a very nice guy but you are completely insane. :D
