Let me give you an example with a normal transport helicopter. Lets take the Black Hawk since we all know that one.
If hit by two RPGs or by too much 50 cal fire it exploades. In reality its much more likely that the pilots lose control of there aircraft and it crashes instead of exploading mid air.
My suggestion goes like this. If a blackhawk in ramiel, gets hit by an rpg the pilot loses control of his bird. He can still fly it and land it but its harder. At the end if hit at a critical point or by too much fire, he will have no control and the helicopter will crash into the ground.
Once it hits the ground helis usualy exploade in the game and the pilots / crew have no chance of surviving. It would be more realistic in my eyes if the explotion wasnt so overpowered. Of corse if the heli falls from 400m he has no chance but lets say that the pilot manages to make his heli rotate till 50m and then hits the ground, some crew members or even a pilot, could be wounded but still stay alive til a rescue squad camed and saved them.
