["Survey"] Static/modeling workshop?

An idea spawned in this thread:

A fun thing we could do is hold a workshop for this static since it involves a lot of aspects that can be useful for peoples future trys at static creation.
Have all the people who want to do it make it. In the end you can chose your favorite(s) and use it on the map.
I could supply the textures, advice and help along the way. I (and I know a lot of other devs like rhino) are always answering the same questions over and over again. We have discussed doing long and detailed tutorials but the fact is that people learn when they make their own stuff.
So having this workshop could teach people to make stuff as well as serve as a library of Q&A.
If any modelers are interested in participating, please post say so in this thread
There wont be any dates for this workshop, as I imagine people posting their progress and questions as they come, in a single "workshop" thread.
That way people can learn from eachother and get inspired and motivated by other members peoples progress and pictures.

Sweet! Really interested! That could help a lot of people who are thinking about starting to model in to the modeling world of PR
We should all go out and learn it ourselves but when/if we have questions we can ask them in the workshop. People who are following it can help each other as well taking off some of the work of your shoulders.
I started using Maya but since most of the BF2 tools are in 3dsmax and windows I need to get started on that. Been looking for a nice excuse to that and this might just be it!

you dont have to switch to 3ds max
All the vbf2 stuff was made in maya and the bf2 file format is made around maya stucture. I've heard that you are able to open one of maya's formats directly in the editor.
However very few of us know our way around maya so all the technical stuff when modeling we cant help you with

I would advise to use 3DsMax9 just to be on the same page as all the other devs etc so its easy to share models etc between each other if need be, espically when it comes to things like vehicle exports etc.
Statics are normally 100% done by one person but for example Z had a load of problems getting the Muttrah Fort exported so I had to help him with that

Yea thats why I wanted to switch over as well. I know it could technically be done Z, but than you get things as flipped vertexes, and converters, etc. etc.
Its a shame because I really enjoyed working in Maya and most of all, with my Itunes music in the back-ground! My windows partition is only for (future) maxing and gaming. So no music on there. Oh well! I still have the radio in the background. /rambling

Is this only for modelling or is mapping also involved?

you wouldn't want to add anything like that as a child object since child objects can not be light mapped easily.

With regard to modelling, Im not sure that much can be added to these tuts that you posted :
I used this one to learn how to model:
3DS MAX Modeling Modeling 1951 Mercedes Benz bus in 3ds Max - Part one Tutorial
Its pretty good, as its short, and makes no assumptions about prior knowledge of 3dsmax ( you have to register, but its free, and worth it! ) All the skills it teaches are transferable to any vehicle modelling, and any other kind of modelling really.
A good tut on UVing and texturing is what is really needed I think. Its very hard to get your head around, because theres not much info on the bf2 system, and most tuts give different methods, which just confuses things.

Yea I agree. I found a lot of UV tutorials but they almost all use a different aproach. Heres a nice site that covers getting a static in the engine as well.

Just out of curiosity, what level of modeling experience are you looking for in participants? I would love to learn from a pro, but I only started using Maya about three weeks ago and i'm still learning the basics.
I've been playing PR since .7 and it would be awesome to contribute to the community.

about level of experince... I don't think you need much experince as the static we will be doing pretty much only consists of primitives (planes, boxes).
The goal is that this shouldn't be a pure modeling thing where people could get stuck, but a walkthrough of the process of creating a static. If some people are more skilled modelers they might create neat little details and fancy modules to use in the static, so that will probably be the main difference between the experinced modelers and the beginners.
I will make a little plan for the thing after sunday.
