Considering buying BF2 just for this game

Alright so I'm a longtime Red Orchestra player, which is easily the best realistic World War 2 FPS shooter I've ever played, and right up there with my favorite, Operation Flashpoint.
But... I've been playing pretty much NOTHING BUT it for the last 2 years and it's starting to get old.
My only experience with the BF series is 2142 which I found fun, but ultimately got tired of pretty quickly, it just doesn't have anywhere near the depth or RO/OFP.
I guess my question is, how does Project Reality compare to Red Orchestra/Operation Flashpoint gameplaywise? Are kills as hard to get? (that's what makes RO so awesome, the ballistics are all completely modeled which makes picking someone off long range with a bolt action rifle quite a feat, since you have to lead your target) Do people cooperate and play as a team at least somewhat? (even in RO there's plenty of n00bery) What special "realism" features does PR feature? (RO for example features blurriness when under heavy fire, weapon stabilization on objects, etc.)
How big is the community? BF2 came out quite a while ago... how many people on average playing PR every night? What approximate % of people have VOIP/mics?

PR has a pretty strong player base, would say that easy 10 servers packed a night. so easy 700+ players average playing. PR just on gamemonitor says 401 playing at 9am BST.
PR just been voted BF2 MOD 2008 winner. PR is easily worth the price of a copy of BF2.
Project reality manual
with voip your find that if you dont use mic your more than likely get kicked from squad. This is a teamwork based game.

https://www.realitymod.com/forum/, then scroll to bottom to see how many people are online. About 570 have visited the website today. It's like this every day.
The average amount of players during weekdays is about 700 I guess, yeah. Weekends are more crowded as you can understand.
BF2 is cheap these days. You can buy it for a couple of bucks. And yes, it's definately worth a try; it gives you the depth you're looking for. Just make sure you have a microphone and communicate with your squad. If the squad don't use mics, join another one. Also, play a couple of games (on different servers if needed) to get a better idea of what PR is like.
I'll let the others do the talking regarding RO/OFP, as I'm pretty sure others have a far better opinion of it (I never played RO, so can't tell).
Welcome to PR.. your new life

I would recommend you check the gameplay videos we have listed on the forums:
https://www.realitymod.com/forum/f112-p ... ideos.html
MOST of them are from regular public games you can have everynight.
What you will see is that the scope of the game is much bigger than RO although it doesn't have some nice realistic features that RO has but we unfortunately can't portray in the BF2 engine (weapon stabilization on objects for example).
Like in any game, you might have a bad experience because of the people you play with. In RO you can only really count on working together with someone if you are friends with him and really want to work together. The game doesn't really have an easy way of making working as a squad a good thing or a requirement of sorts. Even on vBF2 you can easily get a squad going, but in PR that gets pushed to the next level. So if you want teamwork and actually working with other people, PR is your thing.
On the bigger maps you will spend some time not even shooting at the enemy at all and if you try to play it like any other FPS you will get killed. In RO the battle is constant because of the spawning on the frontlines. PR made all the spawn points (except the main) player based, so it's up to the players to setup the right positions. If you don't mind not shooting every 10s you will be fine.
I would suggest getting BF2 (as it's pretty cheap now), reading the manual (to understand the basic stuff) and joining a squad that has a good squad leader (he talks, has a rally point, an officer kit and his squad is together with him, not spread out around the map). You will probably have a good time if you have that.
You wouldn't be the first to get the game to play the mod

I bought BF2 only for PR. It was definitely worth it.
Also, PR was the mainreason why I got myself a computer.
All the best,

I can honestly say that Project Reality is one of, if not
the best, online FPS i have played to date. When playing with a good squad, using VOIP, tactics and teamwork, this game is literally miles ahead of any competition. I've been playing since v0.25 and have always found myself coming back for more.
Ofcourse with the amount of new players becoming involved, there will be moments of:
"Oh dear... my SL doesn't have a mic and just tried to pilot a Cobra with a sniper kit..." (which you can't do in PR...just incase you didn't know:neutral
However in my experience, 90% of the time this wont happen. I can safely say that the majority of the time i've joined a squad and had a great time... i'm not part of a clan and i guess joining one would probably enhanced the teamwork aspects even further; but even without joining a clan i've had some seriously epic matches working with others on public servers.
To conclude... DO IT. If you liked Red Orchestra you'll like PR, it's not quite as frantic as RO all the time (i personally prefer the slower pased more realistic approach), but there are moments of sheer brilliance in the Mod. that'll leave you wanting more and make you so happy that it's actually
Free. (disriguarding the small price of BF2 :wink

Alot of people use teamwork, it's just not fun w/o it.
Yes you get blurry when you are underfire. Try sniping w/o lying down.. Doesn't work.
Most of the guys have mics, some don't but they follow orders. Just try the game out at a friends or something, you'll like it. ( It does take like 1 week to actually start enjoying it though, don't know why. )

Sounds good guys, I'm gonna go get a copy of BF2 tommorow.
Hope it runs on my comp... my video card is slowly dying so I had to underclock it to the max (lol). Think it'll run on an underclocked Nvidia 7900GS?
I guess if RO works this should too.
Do I need any of the expansions or only BF2 core?

Oh and one last thing... PR has fully modeled accurate ballistics right? None of this hitscan/laser tag bullshit?

Due to limitations in the enginge it's not as good as, for example RO, but it's way better than vBF2. It's not something you really notice once you're in there.
