its cod4

But it fires 7.65 mm rounds right (or what is it)
so it guess it isnt a SMG, since they fire 9 mm (right?)

ak47 uses 7.62 rounds, ak 74 uses 5.56

ak 74 has less power, but less recoil and therefore is easier to shoot things with imo.

Buts its personal preference.

The AK74U is a carbine weapon. Much like the US M4 rifle.

It is a combo of the size of an SMG and the power of a rifle bullet. COD4 has it missed labeled.

Its basically a rifle-powered SMG.

The AK74 is a full length assault rifle. Its the M16 when compared to the M4.

Ak74u is not a Smg. It is a carbine much like cheesy said. Smgs are defined by being compact, shooting a pistol round. etc

Cod4 do actually call it the Ak74U i believe. Also if im right the U type variants of AK are also known as the spetznas, or am i mistaken? Also another difference is AK 47 made in 1947, the AK 74 made int 1974. Also there is the newest Ak, the AK101 and i believe it uses the 5.56 nato round.

The CoD4 is an AK-74U, the vbf2 is an Aks-74U(thanks to ea, it's just called the ak-74u), PR is a true AkS-74U. The "s" designation means that it has a folding stock, the "u" means its a carbine, or shorter version, of whatever gun it's based on. Both '74's use the 5.45x39 round, little smaller than the 5.56x45 of NATO small arms and like Cheditor said, the AK-101.

I suggest you look up the answer yourself, as many of the responses so far have been riddled with errors.

Fires: 5.45x39mm
They are both assault rifles in the truest sense. The first is the original AK-74, basically an AKM (which is an AK-47 only "modernized" a bit, which means some internal parts are improved) chambered for 5.45x39mm. The second one is an AK-74M, or "AK-74 Modernized," which is the same as the AK-74 only parts of its frame are polymer and lighter, much like the M16, and is the primary service rifle for the Russian military. The last one is an AKS-74, which is exactly like the first one but with a collapsible stock.
AKS-74u, as in seventy-four-you wrote: Image

This is a carbine. It fires assault rifle rounds, which are intermediate-sized cartridges. It also has a short barrel. The definition relating barrel length to whether or not it is a carbine or not are sketchy, some say 16.5 inches, some say 11.5 inches, but it doesn't matter in this case because the AKS-74u has a barrel length of ~8 inches (Source is World.Guns.ru). It is not a submachine gun. Submachine guns fire pistol sized rounds, such as .45, 9x19mm, .357, etc. The definition relating round size to whether or not it is a pistol round is sketchy, but it is pretty much universally accepted that 5.45x39 is an assault rifle round. Its size is comparable to 5.56x45mm NATO.

Its name breakdown is this: AK, for Avtomat Kalashnikova, which means "Automatic Kalashnikov." Kalashnikov is the guy who invented the AK47 system (Which this and the AK74(M) uses basically, size changes a bit), and "automatic" is for automatic fire. The S means it has a collapsible stock, and the U stands for Ukorochennyj, which means "shortened"
None of these are submachine guns. A submachine gun fires pistol-sized rounds. Again, definition of "pistol-sized" can be debatable, but 5.45x39 is definitely not pistol-sized.

Yes sub machine guns don't necessarily use pistol rounds just rounds more powerful than a pistol but less than a standard rifle/assault rifle.

Too add even further insult to injury even the COD wiki knows that the AK74u is not a sub machine gun. AKS-74u - The Call of Duty Wiki - Call of Duty 4, Call of Duty 2, characters, and more
CODwiki wrote:In Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, the AKS-74u is incorrectly[1] considered a submachine gun. The weapon is named correctly, although the AKS-74u has a side folding stock like shown in the reference, while the AK-74u has an underfolding stock. It is first found on the level Crew Expendable and seen semi-commonly throughout the game being used by the Russian Loyalists, Ultranationalists, the Middle-Eastern OpFor, and Nikolai once he is rescued in Blackout and during the subsequent level, Hunted.

I thought pistol rounds were more about shape then overall size when it came to definition, the 2 main things that seem to differentiate them from rifle rounds seem to simply be their width to length ratio and the bluntness of the actual projectile.

Oh noes, the SMG definition.

In german, we only know the word "Maschinenpistole" for both, SMG's and "machine pistols" (which is the translation).

The MP5 for example, a classic SMG, is acutally called "machine pistol 5".

Pistol - because of the pistol rounds. So at least in german, this type of weapon is defined by the round they use.

In english however, "Sub machine gun" does not say much about the round type, but from the weapons usually considered SMGs, I'd still use the definition depending on the round type.

Pistol rounds -> SMGs
Rifle rounds -> Carbines
And the newer crazy mixtures of the two -> "PDWs" (Though again, the MP5k variant was called a PDW even though it used 9mm)

So for the AK74, however short a variant of it is, I'd still say it's a rifle or carbine.

But that's just common sense I apply here, nothing of that is based on the correct definitions or anything, as I doubt there even exists a general definition for SMGs that isn't limited to a country at least.
