How to Make your Game Run Better (FramesPerSecond and Internet fix)

Hello

Ive just compiled a few tips on how to make your game run a lot better. It may even give you the extra boost that you need to run on full graphics.

Back to Basics
FPS or Frames Per Second is the speed at which your game runs. A higher fps is a better speed game. For example 1 fps would literally be like a slideshow weather fps capped off at 125 fps or if you have an even better computer 250 fps your game would be speedy and smooth. To have a good FPS you will want a constant one. Higher isnt always better. If your computer cannot handle a constant 250 fps which would mean it was inbetween 200and 250 all the time that would be bad. It would slow down, also you cant jump as far if your fps isnt constant. So lets say your computer can with-hold a constant 125 fps. To cap it at 125 in the BF2 Console you need to type "game.lockfps 125" (without the "").
Now press enter to send the command to BF2 console and now your FPS is capped at 125.
You can see what your fps currently is running at by again opening the console, and typing "renderer.drawfps 1" to turn the FPS counter off type "renderer.drawfps 0"

Just cant get Enough FPS :(
If you want to raise your FPS if only by 10 Frames then there is a secret way. Start BF2 then open Project Reality mod etc. Now your on your Main Screen in PR. "Alt + Tab" to temporarly close BF2 window then press "Control+ Alt + delete" to open your Task Manager. Once open click "Processes" then if you look through the list that comes of what your computer is currently running, you will eventually see "BF2.exe". If you right click on "BF2.exe" then move your mouse to "Set Priority" then click on "High" under the Set priority option. then close Task manager and go play! your fps will have increased for some people under 10 fps more for others over 50more.

Get a better MS Rate (Ping) to Game Servers
PLEASE UNDER 18'S ASK PARENTS PERMISSION BEFORE DOING THIS
What I am about to tell you is not only going to improve you ping/ms rate but it will also increase your overall internet speed. This is probly best for people over 18 to do, if your not then you should ask your parents permission first please. What you need to do is to call your ISP (internet service provider) for example BT Internet. You call your ISP and you ask the operator "Please can you turn Interleaving OFFon my internet please".
Now I know for a fact that BT Internet cannot say no. But some other companies might. This is perfectly legal all they are doing is changing your current line and putting it on a fast track. It will take a couple of days to turn on usually, so its not instant but they normally give you and ETA as to when it will be done. Believe me, you will notice the difference. Before I didnt ask for my interleaving to be turned off I have 49/55 ping to UK servers (where i live). Now I ping 21 to 31!!! A massive improvement.

So hopefully this will help you and your game run better :)

Please feel free to question me (Joe) by replying to this post or PM'ing me. Have Fun !

Might try these, but is there a way to revert these changes?

yes. you wont need to change the fps it wont effect or do anything wrong :/ if you put it to low the game will become "julty" to stop "jultyness" just turn up FPS cap i think BF2 default is 1000 but i dont know anybody that can get a constant on 1000 ?

Right, cheers might try these :) .

But, this interleaving thing. It being on by default makes me think it's a good thing, what is its actual function? Will there be unwanted side-effects from turning it off?

It sounds like some sort of security feature or a way of making sure all packets reach the destination...

Stu.

The safest thing to do before any change affecting your BF2.exe is to just make a copy of BF2, it will take a while to copy but its better than having to reinstall and repatch like moi is doing now :P

If you use Sky Broadband ( UK ISP ), then call them and ask for "game settings". I always wondered what they were, but I suspect its this interleaving thing. It almost halved my ping :)

Setting the priority to high would possibly make it become unstable and wont respond correctly anymore.

OK I researched interleaving, check this out, very helpful: Interleaving - Wikipedia
Especially the bit about 'Interleaving in data transmission' - I assume this is the most relevant.

It seems interleaving is supposed to reduce the chances of data being lost in transmission (thought so! :D ) but increases latency (ping) because of the way the data is rearranged.

It seems, then, that by turning it off you will get lower ping but there is a chance that data is randomly lost. This could manifest itself in your game and the server getting out of sync, resulting in your soldier jumping around jerkily, or control inputs being lost, or hits not registering. That's one of the biggest complaints about Soldat, it uses UDP (instead of TCP) which doesn't re-send lost packets, so the connection is faster but sometimes hits don't register and characters move randomly.

Probably won't be an issue with BF2 though. I think it uses TCP, too.

Stu.

PS - Mora, could you expand on that?

mora thats untrue... why would they make a setting that makes it run properly ???

your logic is bad son.. the reason they have it is because your CPU diverts more power than normal into this exe. speeding it up..

@Stu
honestly mate i can see procautions but it is nothing to worry about. Nothing will go wrong especially with the exe. mora has just made that up i think? ive never heard such rubbish but then .. its your choice you dont have to do it .. its "advice" so it will help you if you do it.. im running all these settings and i get 250 constant on BF2/cod4 and 125 on CSS

That's one tip I didn't know about, but is it really unstable?

"C:\Program Files (x86)\EA GAMES\Battlefield 2\BF2.exe" start /AFFINITY 2 /HIGH +modPath mods/pr +menu 1 +fullscreen 1 +szx 1680 +szy 1050 +playerName XXXXX +playerPassword XXXXX

^^ Thats my target line - as you can see it sets the priority to HIGH automatically - doesn't cause me any problems ;)

I'd like to know what sort of hardware you have plus what video settings you have in game.
Also are we talking 250 FPS in BF2 or in PR, because theres a big difference.

The reason why I'm curious is because I have a pretty decent computer and I only manage to get about 80 fps on maps such as kashan, though as long as it stays above 40 fps then I'm happy.

I put mine on realtime and it responds perfectly fine and it never crashes. only i get 60 more frames per second in bf2, and on crysis when i put it on normal it is choppy at like 12 fps but when its on realtime it shoots up to supersmooth.

he made a disgussion for everyone to partisipate in, i think its in the right section. but i dont really need a better fps for me, as my computzort Rokkz teh boat, and i get a good fps, any higher wouldnt be visibly noticable.
