I found a site which offers 4 links to download that file.

4 Mirror URLs for "dotnetfx35.exe" - FindFiles.com

Now, i hope those of you who have had problems installing 0.86 will find the answer there.

Sorry if this is in the wrong section, feel free to move it.

That file is a failure. It took over an hour to download on a 25meg connection. Plus it says done downloading far before it actually is finished. On top of that the downloader will not close. And now when I install it it does the same exact thing as when I was downloading it. Please help. this is frustrating. It say my comp still does not have the file. i have restarted.

I started it, it was going 238 kb/s, it was around 2/10 of the way through after 20 minutes, then it just blanked and the progress bar went resetted and it tried to initialize again and then it kept connecting and disconnecting then it suddenly stopped for 5 minutes and suddenly, it just pops up and is done half way at 68 kb/s.

Is there a way to speed it up? This installer sucks ***! Help!

God damn, this installer sucks... I was away and returned to see my download had completed, so I yay!'d and closed Firefox as I was instructed, next thing I clicked retry after closing Firefox and the progress bar was down at 1/4 complete and I came to realize that the download had not actually completed and that this installer is just a failure. Now I'm halfway through going slowwwwwwwwwww. However, Leonard Cohen is on BBC Four so I'll just chill to him for a bit....

Alright guys... I finally succeeded in getting that god damn .NET Framework 3.5 installed and I got the 0.86 patch installed as well.

It seems there is some kind of complication between the service packs and the previous versions of .NET Framework. Now I will have to say that I have no high level knowledge about this kind of stuff so I just got kind of lucky I guess. Here's what I did:

First part may not be relevant but I will share it with you just in case
Since I've been having trouble getting XP Service Pack 3 installed I never had it fully installed. I had to abort the installation because there was a file that couldn't be found. SO you should think that windows automatically would uninstall the files from that failed service pack installation, but I discovered the SP3 was in the add/remove list so I uninstalled it from there.
Now I realize that there are probably not many of you who had this specifik problem so I don't think the above mentioned is important for the rest of you guys.

This may be the source of the problem
After this I uninstalled the previous versions of NET Framework from the add/remove list. The versions I had installed was 2.0-1.1(hot fix)-1.0.
I uninstalled all of them, restarted my computer and tried to run the "offline installer" for 3.5 NET Framework mentioned above. The installation went smoothly and much more quickly than my first attempts that had a duration on approx. 1 hour. This time it took like 20-30 minutes.

I hope this can help some of you guys and I hope that I made myself understandable. If this is a general solution I hope some MOD will write this in a more user friendly way.

Wait, wait, wait....

Don't we only need SP1? Is that offline installer for all of them? It worked fine for me. In fact the one before got an error (so it was corrupted), and this one repaired it. I haven't finished downloading 0.86 yet though. We'll see where it goes from there.

If you are getting errors installing .NET you have to ask yourself why.

I am afraid that the answer will be because your system is not in a valid state.

Now instead of screaming FUD , you need to fix it. You are operating a microsoft operating system and installing a microsoft framework. They go together hand in glove. Any errors you experience are down to you having compromised your system at some time.

If you do not believe me ... install an OS from scratch on a cleanly formatted drive and then install .NET. There will be no problems.

Seriously folks ... its an unfortunate truism , but to operate a PC you do need to know a bit about them. If you would rather not then you are honestly better off owning a MAC. However it is also an unfortunate truism , that Windows operating systems are very prone to being compromised. Its a good idea to get into the habit of reinstalling your OS periodically and remembering this mantra.

"A lean machine is a mean machine".

KarateDoug , PM me , if you want I will remote into your system and sort it out.

I think ive found out the problem, ive had V2.2 installed(came with system)I then installed 3.0 but couldnt fully install it,To install it I have to go to Programs and Features, but it always says "some of this programs features werent activated" or something similar to that when I attempt to do it.

Are you on Vista Trooper22 ? If so do you have SP1 installed for vista ? IF so , you do not need to do anything other than install 3.5 on your clean system and the the 3.5 Sp1.

The problems arise when you install older versions of .NET , you should always try to go for the most uptodate.

Basically if you are on XP ... and you have .NET 2.0 SP2 installed then you do not need to install 3.5 SP1. I actually wrote the exe to be .NET 2.0 compliant, but the problem arises because you need the SP2 installed and for vista you cannot download that, the only way you can get it is by installing 3.5 SP1.

However there is nothing wrong with installing 3.5 Sp1 as you will need to have it on your machine soon anyway as whether the doom and gloom merchants like it or not ... .NET is the future for Microsoft, that is not going to change, and if folks don't like it then folks should switch to MAC.

.NET is already built into both Vista and Windows 7 ... its not going to go away, it underpins C# which is fast becoming one of the major application development languages due to the speed at which software can be written in it.

If its not working for you ... try uninstalling your .NET versions first, you can do this simply by going to your Add/Remove programs. (although if on vista you will never get rid of the base 2.0 as its built in)

Sometimes though if errors occurred during installation, it can be hard to uninstall it completely , in which case you should use a tool like this ...

Completely Uninstall/Remove .Net Framework with .Net Framework Cleanup

But only as a last resort .... its for removing damaged traces , not uninstalling .NET which you should always do through add/remove programs.

I have a XP computer where NET 3.5 installed perfectly and PR is fine, but I cant go on MP because the computer lags alot(lags before and after startup 24/7)I prefer to use my Vista over my XP because it takes half an hour to get into a game(or atleast it feels like it) on XP while it takes a few minutes on my Vista.I seriously want to play PR on my Vista again, and im not sure if SP 1 will help
Edit:Woot, got my other comp unlaggy with ccleaner,i can play online now,so,see you all on the battlefield =D

I have recently made a clean install of my Vista Home Premium 64-bit and I also could not install .NET 3.5 SP1 (installer kept returning not too meaningful messages). I tried everything I could find on the net (including MSDN forums/blogs), from "system components state fixing" to ".NET cleanup". I finally gave up. The solution for me was the make a clean install again, FIRST install full Vista Service Pack 1, THEN install .NET 3.5 SP1 using installer downloaded manually from Microsoft (attempt to install it via Windows Update was still failing).
