The difference of choppers between PR and BF2

Now I have no way of knowing which way this thread will go, but I started it to talk about one particular thing. Most of you probably know that, in PR, when you apply negative thrust in a chopper (press S), the controls of the chopper reverse. Which is WTF!? for new and experienced pilots alike.

When I was downloading the new version of PR, I was playing BF2 singleplayer to pass the time. While playing, I got my hands on a chopper; when I came in to land for repairs, I used the S key to decend, and I noticed something. The controls did NOT reverse! If they don't in BF2, then WHY do they in PR? Because anyone with brains know that this does not happen in real life.

(Now I know using negative thrust to descend is just a limitation of the game engine (Or is it?))

But I have to ask again: Why does this happen in Project Reality?
It causes many a crash, as you either have to wait two minutes to land from a really high altitude (or simply descend from going over a mountain), or risk crashing because your instincts betray you.

Because the negative thrust is as high as the upwards thrust.

It's actually a real pet peeve of mine, not just as in how helicopters handle, but also as what happens ingame because f it (helicopters flying upside down).

In CA I am removing reverse thrust from all the helis and making them descend a bit faster without.

Don't you get the "vortex ring effect" if you press S long enough?

Not to hijack the thread but make it so you can do a back flip with no effort, cause in CA now it bugs the hell outta me.

About the reverse thrust yea it's a bug imo but it's been like that since .75 (maybe longer) and it doesn't seem anyone has attempted to fix it yet.

Can do a back flip with no effort? Its not that easy in real life as far as I know. Try the Apache and Cobra if you want, they are the basically finished versions, the rest are all still very wip.

Reverse thrust wasn´t a bug, it was attempting to enable helis to descend faster. It was very bad though because you could fly upside down and you flipped/lost control using reverse trust anyway.

Would be nice if the thing gets sorted out because its really not cool..

Maybe don't press the S key constantly and just tap it like I do? I'm not crashing choppers because of that.

Just go fast and low, so when you do need to land, its all about handling speed, not altitude... ;)

never noticed that myself, but I don't really move when I'm pressing S

joystick throttles are a advantage because of this, set ur thrust to 10% or so to descend.

But I hope they remove this as well. Pilots like to "show off" ingame by going upside down when they are bored. They think it looks impressive, they don't seem to realise that the words going through the audience are "what a complete tit"

Erm fail? Do you think we flip helicopters all the time in real life :lol :?

Fuzzy just got....

Brum bummed

Ye, as Mainerror's said, it's still possible to fly by tapping S or using a throttle, and it did fulfil it's function of getting you to the ground fast (though unfortunately you'd sometimes go out of control if you went full throttle down :p ), but I do hope CA's handling get's in, as it means the potential issues with the reverse thrust "workaround" disappear.

The horizontal speed magnifier is set too high on PRs helicopters giving them odd flight characteristics as well.

Maniac302: When you press the S key, that equates to pushing the throttle forward/down. When you push the throttle down, that makes the rotors not spin as fast, therefore not "grasping" the air as much, making it fall. It all makes sense in what happens. Just enough and you'll descend at a fair amount. Too much and you'll fall. When you want to land, TAP the S key and never hold it down.

And Alex6714, stop hi-jacking threads and advertising Combined Arms.

Um, you know CA is testing stuff that might make it into PR one day?

I am not one for advitising anything in the wrong place, but come on. If I say "Yeah I agree, play Flight simulator and you will see how different the handling is" would you take that as an advert?

Quite simply, thos who agree the handling needs a bit of change, I am saying that I have changed it as have a load of other mods and to see what you think. Sigh.

Sorry but lets get rid of the elitist attitude shall we please.

He's not, he's simply saying that a better representation of helicopter handling is available for PR to use, offering a suggestion for the work around that is evidently no longer needed.

The way you describe it is true, rotors no longer grasping as much air, and therefore lowering thrust. It works like that in Combined arms (and thus can be implemented whenever the PR Devs feel they can), whereas in PR it's actually thrusting downwards, as if the rotors went in the opposite direction. It was an ok workaround which wasn't altogether unrealistic and not completely detrimental, but when faced between CA helicopter handling and PR handling, I'm sure everyone whose tried it would tell you they'd love to see it in PR.

Seems you just can't win when trying to suggest fixes.

If you suggest something cool but difficult and you can't or have not done it yourself, people ***** and tell you to stop complaining and make it yourself.

When you actually make the effort and suggest something you've actualy proven to work, they say you are plugging your work like some kind of jackass.

People just cant get over riding on their high horses these days.

I just did some further experimenting in Bf2, and I found that yes, pressing S definetley makes choppers decend faster, however, it does not reverse the controls, and it does NOT allow you to fly upside-down. So how did they do it? If they did it, surely the PR devs can do it to.
