Knifing firebases

Destroying firebases by knifing the radio should be removed.

IIRC firebase spawns are now disabled when the firebase is overrun but without collapsing the firebase back into a foundation and knifing the firebase is more of a gamey mechanic that was put in to prevent people spawn camping because they had no other way of taking it out.
IMO it ruins the immersion; the spawn is disabled when overrun so it's no longer a threat and if someone wants to destroy it completely, they should do it via C4/incendiary/vehicles, not by stabbing a radio that magically explodes the firebase.

I disagree, since the firebase is an inherrently unrealistic asset (its a gameplay lubricant which is necessary to keep up the pace of the game) it doesn't particularly matter. you need to incendiary the base anyway, so no problem.

Also, destroying firebaes would become a real chore for the INS.

They have IEDs and the RKG3 could also be tweaked to work with destroying firebases, come to think of it.

yeah, this would suck for insurgents.
"hey achmed, have you got an ied"
"no, i used all of mine on that apc"
"you over there, you have an american kit, got a thermite?"
"sorry, i used it on their truck"
"well... i guess we will just sit here and wait till someone shows up with something to blow it up"

Well I do agree you shouldn't remove the knifing because I can stick a knife in a radio and blow it out just as real. But as far as what you said, that would just mean you should not have been there in the first place if you don't have the ammunition to take it out. It shouldn't be a point where insurgents should always be able to blow up the firebases just because they are there. You either have the ordnance or you don't.

FOB's are also very realistic, just not in the timeframe that is given on the game. If I built a fob in iraq after about a few weeks of setting up tents and stuff, it could just as easily be used as a security point for dropping off reinforcements and ammunition.

I think I remember a Calvary division setting up a FOB for tankers in like 2 days and all they did there was play cards and reload ammo for about a month before burning it to the ground.

Well if we can knife firebases then we should be able to destroy a tank with a knife to. After all if the tank crew lets us get close that obviously means the tanks not being used properly so duh it should just dissapear after a knife attack. [/sarcasm]

I have 100% support for this. If your squad doesnt have the power to destroy a firebase then they dont have the firepower. Quarenteen off the area making sure enemys cannot get close. Then somehow get explosives to destroy it. After all this is project reality.

While were on the sub ject why do we need to be hurt when we destroy a firebase>? its extremely annoying as insurgent bleeding out for doing something useful.

Knifing the Firebase 4 times will result in it's immediate destruction, but you will take a little bit of damage.
Knifing the Firebase 3 times will result in it blowing up about 10 seconds later, giving you enough time to drop an incendiary grenade to burn the rubble and also to run away to prevent you from taking damage.

Also, once you knife it three times they can't spawn on it so they won't appear while you are waiting the 10 seconds for it to collapse.

and how can you tell when a guy came before you and knifed it 3 times but didn't have a grenade to finish it off? you step up to knife and get hurt for your trouble. i think the bigger problem is with feedback. you don't really know how many times you've knifed it because there is no feed back. how about the radio get's visibly broken (or smokes) when you've knifed it enough times to dis-allow spawn and the whole base gets destroyed wiht one more stab. or something similar to let you know you are causing something to happen incrementally.

Knifing it twice is enough to trigger the destruction as well I believe, but it takes alot longer and is fixed with a couple of shovels if caught early.

Indeed, knifing twice takes about 20 seconds for it to explode, whilst 3 times is faster but you still have time to get away.

Really I disagree that it should be removed, the whole firebase system is a gameplay mechanic that is somewhat removed from reality anyway.

I think this feature should be kept in as in real life, it is just sand bags, which could kind of be kicked over.

Or just move the radio outside of the FB so knifing it many times wont make it collapse on you.

unstead of knifing the radio couldnt the enemy shovel it instead? i dont mean for rebuilding it i mean for knocking it down.
so its abit more realistic :)

Don't think thats possible, i think that would count as doing damage, and AFAIK weapons can only do one effect, either repair or damage.

Actually you should be able to just push the firebase over... It's made out of sandbags, it's not exactly nailed down.
Push the sandbags over and throw them away and just pull up the poles holding the netting in place and break the radio.

You really think you need explosives for that at all?

And frankosuave, it's called situational awareness.
You need to keep your eyes open and be aware of everything going on.

Alot of times I've knifed a firebase just to see some noob running towards it when I'm running away, I mean what did he think I was doing there? Taking a nap?

How the heck are you supposed to know what some other goof ball is doing if you cant talk to him (hardly anyone uses mumble) and just because I see a person in an area where something useful "can" be done, doesn't mean that person isn't an idiot or hasn't RTFM. The point I was trying to make is you do not get "feedback" on what you are doing. Feedback tells us how we are doing. you can extend this into many aspects of the game and life.
