CTD after 5 to 10 Minutes

I have been playing PR for about 4 months now. I upgraded to 0.86 as soon as it was ready and played a couple times and then went on travel for the last 3 weeks. I just returned and started to play and now my game is experiencing CTD after about 5 to 10 minutes of gameplay.

I have seen several posts on this topic, but no real answer as to cause or solution. I do not have Vista so that is not my problem.

Today I uninstalled everything, including BF2 and reloaded it all. Since the first version was a patch from 0.856, I downloaded the 0.86 core and levels to fresh install it.

Today I have tried to play several times and experienced the same problem.

I have played BF2 for about 2 hours this morning with no trouble...so the one's that stated they had troubles with BF2 also, I am not experiencing that...just CTD with PR with no error log or messaging.

My Specs:

Operating System Microsoft Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3 (Build 2600)
System Memory 1535.7
Processor Speed 2593.9
DirectX Version 9.0c
Display Device NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GS
Display Memory 512.0
Display Driver 6.14.11.7824
Sound Device SB X-Fi Audio
Sound Driver 2.10.00.0001

***EDIT*** I also have the downloadable version of BF2 Complete Edition from EADM. Thought I would mention that. This is the same version I used with 0.856 and it worked fine there. ***EDIT***

I have also updated Punkbuster to the current version. I lowered my graphics down to low, my sound is set to medium fidelity. There is nothing real extreme going on in the background.

Any other ideas or suggestions?

Thanks

Are you using the downloaded version of BF2? IF yes check out:
Another fix to try when having crash to desktop issues

If you still have problems
run PR in 'windowed' mode to see if any error messages come up
(instead of running in full screen, it runs in a 'window')
To do so
Right click on shortcut.
Choose properties from bottom of list.
Modify the text in your shortcut's 'target' window.

Change
+fullscreen 1
to
+fullscreen 0

Then Google or use 'search' on Project Reality web page for the error message you get.

Some have posted Updating with the
FULL update 1.41
Sometimes does not complete, but looks like it does.
To find your version of BF2
run PR in 'windowed' mode
Look at the upper left corner
you should see
v.1.1.2965-797.0

Good luck

Did you remember to update BF2 with :
FULL update 1.41

Have you tried the mini disk image + unlocked BF2.exe (the one that can use 2gigs+ ram?)?

You both could benefit from more ram.
Ram is cheep so consider upgrading to 2+ gigs

If you still have trouble run battlefield cleaner to flush out your video cache files

Still no joy?

Trash your BF2 cache files
Path:
C:\Users\'your user name here'\Documents\Battlefield 2\mods\bf2\cache

Throw EVERYTHING inside the folder named cache away.
don't worry the files will be replaced with new ones when the game restarts.

Still CTD?
Make a new user and try to join a server.
Don't worry about your settings yet, battlefield cleaner can transfer old
settings to the new one later

If CTD persist.
OK
Some other things you can try before you uninstall/reinstall.
Backup your BF2 folder that's inside your documents folder.
Once you have a backup delete the original from your documents folder.
Try starting PR from your PR shortcut
a new default folder is created
link to your online account.
If all goes well (CTD gone) all you have to do to get your custom settings back is copy your 'control' file from your backup to the new profile folder.
path:
C:\Users\your user name here\Documents\Battlefield 2\Profiles\0002
note: you may not have a 0002 folder so use 0001

Before you go the uninstall/reinstall route
Consider

Keep in mind Summers here and
I've read 80% of CTD are caused by overheating video card issues
so rule out overheating issues by opening your case,
cleaning inside and setting up a large fan to blow into the open case
while you play a few rounds. If that helps install a extra fan or two.

Finely
Please review the v0.86 PR install guide to see if you might have missed something.

Good luck

PS It is a good idea to backup to DVD a full copy of your BF2 folder once you have a good working copy setup the way you like. Don't forget to include the BF2 folder from your documents as well.
Future problems can be quickly replaced from your backup.

Good luck

Thanks Palerider...I will give the couple of things a shot. Then it is upgrade the PC time.

I am trying to remember how much I played 0.86 before going on travel. I am guessing right now that I might of played only once or twice for more than 15 minutes. 0.856 I played a lot.

Thanks again for the ideas and I will let you know the results!
