Commander zoom?

Just wondering, is there any way that the commander could be given an RTS like overview of the battlefield? Or is this outside the scope of the BF2 engine?

I know it's not exactly realistic, but I think it would make commanding much more fun and encourage more people to do it.

Commander is such a crucial role, I played a round today with a solid commander on Basrah... it made all the difference. Took out three caches with arty strikes and the coordination between squads was awesome (all thanks to the commander issuing orders, and passing transport/resupply/support requests over VOIP between different squads). All of this on a pub of course. The fact is, MOST of the community are very solid teamplayers, and listen to orders, all we need is a good system to coordinate and issue those orders. Mumble is cool, but not everyone has it and it's not built into the game itself. Talking to the commander who then talks to the squad that you want to talk to works very well.

The problem is, the role can be quite boring so hardly anyone takes it (or if they do it's only to call in one needed strike)

I think this alone would do wonders for making people more invested in playing commander.

I'd suggest if we DID do this that it would only show friendly units though obviously.
