Explanation of Mumble to Friend

May one of you guys, preferable a Dev-Con-Com,explain to my friend, MelonPaste, the usefulness of Mumble?
It took me about 50 minutes to explain to him how it works, how its different from TeamSpeak, and VOIP.
Then it took me another 30 minutes to explain to him how it would be useful ingame but afterwards.
[22:20] BOB: AND
[22:20] BOB: MUMBLE IS JUST SOME THING
[22:21] BOB: \THAT ALLOWS EVERYONE TO ALK
[22:21] BOB: BOTH TEAMS????
[22:21] Anhkhoa: YES
[22:21] Anhkhoa: BUT
[22:21] Anhkhoa: ITS NOT A JUST
[22:21] BOB: THATS MESSED UP
[22:21] Anhkhoa: HOW THE HELL IS THAT
[22:21] BOB: BECAUSE ITS SIMPLY POINTLESS
After I said its for inter-squad comms, he said its pointless because you could just use the commander.
In the end he said, its for nubs, because you can't realistic hear someone 80 meters away.
[22:29] BOB: i just think its...not all that effective
[22:29] BOB: squads are not always meant to be togheter like that
So ya...
Could you guys explain how Mumble works and how useful it is?

Mumble is about the little situations.
You are trying to get in to a compound, but you have no shotgun, a blue rifleman specialist is walking past.
"Mate, I need a shotgun here asap"
do you type it? without mumble you must, but with mumble you can get help from your blue friends quickly and without putting urself at risk while typing.
You need to tell a pilot where to go?
sure you can type b4kp2, but what if one of you men got left behind? what if the pilot knows there is AA near, he has to type all this information while you scream "GO GO GO" at him
with mumble Blues are now green.
And you don't always have a commander
and with teamspeak if you ask for that shotgun to help you out...31 other people hear it which means that people can't hear other coms.
Its about increasing teamwork WITHOUT increasing radio traffic. <- that is how I'd sum it up
edit, sorry Anhk, I assumed you were using the term in a derogatory manner. I apologise.

And REMOVE "THAT JEW" REFERENCE, that really pissed me off (my mother was held at knife point because she was a 'Jewish C*nt', so u better remove that comment before I really get worked up)
Sorry, that was his Xfire nickname, ill edit it out

3 things I like about mumble:
1:As a medic I run up to any dead guy from my team, crouch down by him and yell - 'heh, did you give up yet' If he says no - I stick him with an epi. No more wasted epipens.
2: I see some blue guys shooting and yell, wheres your contact and then they actually tell you.
3: sq leader radio - huge asset. Tonight on muttrah, whole up in mosque. at east city, surrounded, we talked to the SL of the cobra squad, within a minute there was nice pile of dead bodies outside the mosque.
We just have to keep pushing mumble, and make more mumble only servers - people will get the drift - it adds a whole new layer to the game.

Until mumble is integrated with PR, hving every server mumble only will only harm the mod in the long run.

Even if you take positional audio out the question it's worth having simply for higher fidelity sound and much lower latency, the low latency really helps you not talk over other people especially when your not in game and just chatting to people.

Where do you download mumble? I'm not in any clans and most my friends don't play PR. Not to mention that not everyone has mumble, so is it worth it for me to download it?

if you or anyone else ever needs help with mumble use one of these links
http://www.realityteamwork.com/mumble
http://www.imgoingin.co.uk/mumble
I think a few other clans operate redirects like these, but I can't remember them.
If your only going to download when everyone gets it, then no1 will get it. Download it, try it. Even with only 5 people out of 32 on a team on mumble it gives potential for great teamwork.

It means instead of aimless squads, you now have a coordinated platoon that can attack/defend while calling in air/artillery support. More realistic. If your friend doesn't understand that then he's been playing too many other videogames and he thinks real war is CoD 4 one man army ****.

Well "bob" why dont you get PR mumble 0.5, start it up, join the "RT eu" channel, join the server, and tell me what you think after playing a round or 2 with 64 people?

I have a question, if I have mumble, but nobody else in my Squad in-game does, can I still hear them? Or will I need to close Mumble down and use In-game VOIP?

Mumble does not replace vanilla VOIP (yet). You can still hear them. If you want to play with many mumble users that are interested in teamwork and good admins that kick those tards trying to ruin your game, try the Reality Teamwork servers.

I hear the term low latency thrown around, so I might as well ask here. Does it pertain to the time it takes voice data to get from one person to another? Unless I've got an exception to the rule, both ts and voip are always instant for me.
(I haven't yet had a chance to try mumble, it's still set on eating me alive)

Whenever I join a Server (matching the Mumble Server) I can hear the people talk, but it always seems to be the other team, I occassionally get friendlys such as squadmates, and the distance seems to be very far, and by far i men like 2 Grids on the map (such as if im in A1, then I can hear people in B1) Do I need to do something?

Used Mumble for the first time tonight, I have to say I'm extremely impressed with how well it works, I thought people were pulling my leg about the whole directional thing but it's pretty good. Had a cobra pilot crash land, he hooked up with our squad and we were able to talk with him, make sure he got somewhere safe.
One thing though, I did all the optimization thingy majiggies on the mumble thread and yet it's still laggier than what TS is for me.
