A possible pattern on new players giving a chance to mumble

Here's a personal critic: I simply didn't download mumble because i had not seen people using it, nor had joined a server encouraging it.

What happened yesterday: I joined PR, updated the server list, a lot of full servers and then I saw a well populated server and joined it, no matter which server it was.
OK, so, it happens it was Reality Teamwork Mumble Only server. I had no idea, just was joining to play some PR.
Then i joined any squad, and the squad was Mumble ONLY (because, unfortunetaly, even though it was a dedicated mumble server, not all people were using it). Started talking and then it was said to me "Dude, we're using mumble".

So, I was there already, joined everything and all, and due to the laziness to quiting the squad or the server I thought "OK, let's give it a try then".
Hit the alt+tab, google "PR Mumble", download it, asked some help to the squadmates who neatly helped readily, and then i became a Mumble user.
Needless to say, methinks, few minutes on using it i became a Mumble fucking fanatic fan. Shit, i had no idea what i was missing.

That's something to think about, many people have really, no idea what they're missing, like me some hours ago.

Here comes the great insight: we need more Mumble dedicated PR servers (maybe obvious, but maybe not much if you look to the server list and see too few servers taking the initiative). Servers with messages on top like "WE'RE USING MUMBLE, DOWNLOAD IT @ www...", mumble addicts creating squads encouraging people to start using it (like the squad I fortunetaly joined on accident yesterday).

I even dreamed about a 0.9 PR with mumble forcedly integrated.

Cheers!

The best servers for mumble are indeed Reality Teamwork mumble (has both a EU and US server)

or Tactical Gamer

only RT kick for mumblers afaik, but I've had some great mumbling times on TG since tehy are the only server that seperate the teams

Hehe - glad you liked it. The EU Reality teamwork server was launched 3 weeks ago, and now we have more mumblers trying to join, than we have room for.

The US Reality teamwork server that you joined, was launched on Friday - hopefully in a few weeks, that server will be 100% full with mumblers too ( as you say, once people try it, they find it hard to play on servers without it )

Once you have a full server of quality players, who know who to use the features of mumble properly, it totally changes PR :D

If theres still people reading this and not knowing about mumble, we have a guide here:

www.realityteamwork.com/mumble

And we also have a rapidly growing x-fire group with regular server info ( Click "Join Cult" ) :

Reality Teamwork Community

My,and maybe others problem with Mumble is that it will always lag my connection. Not the game thats allright but I will have a ping of 300+ and thats not really enjoyable, and you´re likely to get kicked for it. I already did what it said in the Forum Manual here,to make it use less Bandwith but still its 300+. So forced integrated Mumble would be the end for me in PR :(

I hate it when people suggest to seperate the teams in mumble. There's two sides to the argument, sure, but can we not fix whats not broken?
ON TOPIC: Mumble is da bomb. If you hate it...well... ;)

there are broken aspects to having the teams in teh same channel.

1) some people just teabag all the time which takes 1/32th of ur team power away for no reason
2) dead bodies can hear your plans
3) dead bodies sometimes try to psych you out
4) the amount of spam is much increased, having 16 per channel means less spam.

The difficulties preventing seperate team channels usually pertains to CTDs when Alt-tabbing more than anything.

Yeah, here's an example on the positive side of not separating the teams.
Yesterday we invaded, in 3 squads, a cache area. All screaming, terrorizing all the insurgents because they could hear us. That's a nice way to freak out the enemy. And it worked, we pinned them down and destroyed the cache. It was TOTALLY awesome.
And when you're at some point kinda away of your squad and you start hearing strange voices? That's neat, you know you're surrounded by enemies.
I say don't separate the teams on mumble. But I understand who does it. Mumble with separated sides is already 1000% more immersive than VOIP.

there are some settings in mumble (cant remember which ones exactly) that can be tweaked if performance is starting to cause trouble

Configure -> Settings -> Audio Input -> Compression and try to lower your quality. Setting it to 5 worked for me.

People are giving the excuse the program is too buggy. That's a lame excuse....

Was on TG, too few people using mumble. But the APC driver was using, and that was cool, saved me some typing and added to the dynamic realism of it.

I know, just because it doesn't work on their computer doesn't mean they shouldn't be having it work on their computer! Really, just because it makes their computer shut down or CTD doesn't mean they can't use it right?

Buggy does mean more than 'garbles voice once in a while'.

Often a great fix for these bugs, is for the server admin to say "well maybe dont play on this server then"

Somehow this seems to magically fix 50% of the problems. ;)

Funny people think they cant play with buggy things.. I mean, they are playing BF2....

Anyway.

I would like all people on PR to get mumble now!

Download it, install it, execute it, connect to the server, join the appropriate server channel, open PR, join the same server as server channel. (Usually youll see what server is filled with mumbleres on mumble)

I would like to tell all you people that doesnt use mumble. Every second that passes that you dont use mumble, god kills a kitten!

OK, doesn't work on John's computer. Doesn't mean John must type in the all chat of a full server that Mumble is buggy. That disencourages people.

And there's the part where all go wrong.

I'm still surprised how stupid you have to be to run a whole infantry squad and communicate with mumble. It's not the first time that I throw a grenade from the roof on a squad which I can hear miles away and hear them bitching when they get killed and talking about where they regroup next

The other thing is playing music or telling stupid stories on the server which no-one gives **** about and ruins everyones games

a poll on the RT forums has decided that music, at least in inappropriate moments will result in admin action

but you are right, in this incarnation of mumble, it is best to use vbf2 voip for intra squad coms, and mumble for inter squad coms. Alot of players have yet to realise this.

But on TG with the 2 channel setup, using mumble as your primary coms method actualyl works, and vbf2 voip serves as your squad radio, and mumble also can act as your SL radio. So thats another reason why 2 channels = win.
