Hi, long time player of PR (since .3). I am having problems playing PR with decent frame rates, mainly on the insurgency maps and mashtuur city. I thought it was because my video card was old, 7600 GT 256mb, so I upgraded to a 9800 GT 512mb. Unfortunately, it didn't make much a difference. Should I assume its because the CPU (Pentium D 2.8 ) just can't handle all that has to be processed in PR?

Is it a single core you have a take it?

Quite possible that this isnt helping if it is

Complete specs

Windows XP 32bit
2.5gb Ram
Pentium D 2.8 (first Intel dual core CPU)

I had your exact same setup, Pentium D with a 8800GT (AKA 9800GT). Played PR on medium. Once I upped my proc to a Phenom II 920, I went to high.

So yes, I think it is the processor.

Thanks for the confirmation. I am surprised the CPU is already too old for games several years old as well.

I was surprised as well. That being said, you should not have any trouble running PR on medium settings, although it may be a bit laggy at times.

Tried, and even lowered resolution to 1200x something from my monitor 1600x1200

I had the same cpu and got maybe 30 fps on medium, when I got my new E8400 I can play on max with AAx4 with 100+ fps on most maps. For 150 bucks it was totally worth it, especially since I can play any other game maxed out as well.

What happens when you put all of the settings on low? Do you still get bad fps?

What kind of sound card do you have? What are your audio settings in game?

Just a thought....do you have any conflicts in device manager?
Have you tried to tweak XP to utilize all of your ram? ~this could cause a problem

Is your mobo using the 955x chipset?
what mobo are you using?

This sparked my curiosity cause I looked up your cpu and found that it came out the same year as the game did. I know that PR is more demanding than vanilla, but in this case I don't think upgrading should be your first option.

I am not certain whether or not I can upgrade the CPU on the motherboard, and even so, given the slow DDR2 pc2-4300 will the new CPU be able to help given the memory speed bottle neck?

Otherwise, it's an IBM computer purchased September 2006, chipset reported by CPUID as i945P/PL/G/GL which Intel says does support Core 2, and socket 775 LGA . But, how do I tell if a new CPU will work or not in the motherboard (BIOS has had several updates, PSU is 325W).

1) All low, still awful. Even lower graphics etc.
2) Audigy 2 ZX 5.1 surround sound.

4) It worked fine in Vanilla even with AA. I just assumed that PR maps have gotten just sooo big that something can't handle it anymore as the smaller maps and less detailed maps seem to be better. ALL insurgency maps are just not playable as is Mashtuur city.

The old ram won't bottle neck you much I still use old ram, and my computer is pretty underpowered but I still get great fps in all games never had a problem either. Save your money up if you need to, better performance won't appear out of thin air you just have to accept you will be spending money.

Sure, that's fine now that I understand that it was the CPU being the bottle neck.

Otherwise, trying to figure out if I can just upgrade the CPU in my existing computer or not.

Well you should check the motherboard to see what cpu series it supports, Make sure you check both the motherboard and the cpu you are buying to see if they are compatible. If you need help post the info here first.

In all honesty I would start saving for a new pc rather than trying to keep updating your current one, depending on what you want, high end dual cores are good value for money.

Agreed, decided to get a new PC and use this one as a HTPC
