[?] Bitmap for map texture

I want to know how to make a bitmap the terrain in a map.
Specifically I want to paste a google earth picture on there so I can use it as a reference as Im terrain editing, and then later remove it when it comes to painting the textures.
It would be a great help to make my map more real and cut the production time.
If a question like this has already been posted (I couldnt find one), please direct me to it.
