Poll: can you use Anti Aliasing and alt-tab on BF2 1.5?

From research I have done, for some inexplicable reason, some people can alt tab and some can't, even though they have the same graphics drivers and hardware. If you can or cannot alt-tab on Battlefield 2 1.5 with 8X anti-aliasing on, post here with the following form:

1: What operating system are you using, and is it fully updated?

2: What is the installation type of Battlefield 2? E.g. Battlefield 2 Deluxe edition, Original Battlefield 2, Battlefield 2 Complete edition, digital download, etc.

3: Graphics card model and driver version, motherboard model and chipset, amount and type of RAM, CPU, screen size and resolution.

4: Do you have anti-aliasing and anisotropic filtering set to "application controlled" in your graphics control panel? If you do not, please turn that on and retest.

5: If you can alt-tab, do you have to go to the main menu before you alt-tab, or press alt-escape, etc?

6: Did you have the booster packs installed before you installed 1.5?

7: What resolution is your desktop running at, and what resolution is Battlefield 2 running at?

8: What soundcard/codec do you have? What driver version is it using?

Make sure you have anti-aliasing and anisotropic filtering set to application controlled.

Update: Some people have reported that if they disable AA, close PR, load it back up, and re-enable AA (8x) they can alt-tab again, and AA appears to be on. It's worth a try :)

In Vista I generally do CTRL+ALT+DEL and press Show Task Manager. This causes BF2 to minimize, and I can easily get back into it by clicking switch to, or just clicking on the bottom.

I am running Vista 32, E6750, 2GB DDR2, 8600GT.

If you would, please post driver versions as well. I'm picking up on something: 4GB of ram=alt-tab problem? Going to go check that. Nope. Not the problem here. Tried it with 2GB and the pagefile off. Still same problem.

Doesn't this seem really weird? Some can, some cannot... One thing I notice with you guys is that there seems to be a correlation between having a 8000 class nVidia gpu and being able to alt-tab.

If you can't, try pressing escape first, then alt-tabbing from the BF2 menu instead.

Not certain on the driver version of my gtx260... I believe it is nvidia's july or august drivers though.

could be a driver thing or perhaps something to do with the ram fix in the patch.

E8400 on P45, 4GB ( with 3,5GB in XP and /userva=2600 in Boot.ini), ATI4870/512-ccc 9.5 Alt-Tab OK with XP, W7B7600

BTW. It's dicussed often in forums and even DICE says: some can and some can't...

I am aware of this. :p What I am trying to figure out is exactly why some can and some can't; there is always a reason. If we can determine the reason, a fix may be possible.

Driver version, version of Windows, method of installation, what version of BF2 do you have installed, do you have special forces installed, is Windows fully updated?

Please post your motherboard model and chipset. I think this may be the root issue.

Judging from the few posters who can alt-tab and posted all the specs, there seems to be some correlation between chipset and alt-tab ability. It seems to be the only difference. Most of those with P45/X48 chipsets seem to be able to alt-tab.

E4300, 3GB of RAM, Vista 32-Bit, SP2, EVGA 9600 GSO 512 With latest drivers. I can Alt-Tab perfectly, but my crappy processor crashes me alot. Factory ASUS P5LP-LE, I haven't updated the BIOS in maybe 2-3 years.

Of those that can alt-tab: do you have your anti-aliasing and anisotropic filtering set to "application controlled" in your graphics control panel? If you do not, then BF2 is simply ignoring anti-aliasing altogether, even if the video options say "8X." I'm thinking this might be the case with many; several people I know have had it on, but when they actually turned the AA on (set to application controlled), they could not alt-tab either.

Some more information: Apparently you can now run a debugger with BF2 (which is nice :D ). I managed to capture this when trying to get back into the game...

Code: Select all

Please go to the nvidia control panel and set anti-aliasing and anisotropic filtering to application controlled, if it is not already set to that, and if not, retest.
