Connection refused by server

When starting up and pressing the "LOGIN" button, I get the message "Connection refused by server".

This after the latest two vista updates.

My query is this: Does anone else have this problem?
I'm at a loss what it can be so any help would be greatly appreciated.

(Note: The game has been working perfectly for a very long time now without any problems)

open "Control Panel" and where it sais "Security" click on "Allow a program through Windows Firewall"
scroll the list looking for bf2 make sure it is ticked
if it is not there add it to the list

If so, uncheck the box and re-enter your password and try to log in.
If that works then you should be able to set it to remember your password the next time you log in.

Afraid none of that works, and checked the network log - getting server replies with ACKs to the requests sent to the login server, but the requests seems to loop despite getting the ACKs. Bit baffled I must admit, also very tired - will look into it later.

Alternatively might just try re-installing incase the (Windows Defender) update screwed me up, despite it supposedly clearing BF2.

Anyways, tired and off to bed!
Thanks for suggestions though!

maybe the profile files are corrupted they are located here: "My Documents\Battlefield 2" (maybe make a backup just to be save)
clear that whole folder, BF2 will recreate those files (all your custom key settings will be gone though)

Some other things you can try before you uninstall/reinstall.
Backup your BF2 folder that's inside your documents folder. Once you have a backup delete the original from your documents folder.
Try starting PR from your new PR shortcut
a new default folder is created
link to your online account.
If all goes well (CTD gone) all you have to do to get your custom settings back is copy your 'control' file from your backup to the new profile folder.
path:
C:\Users\your user name here\Documents\Battlefield 2\Profiles\0002
note: you may not have a 0002 folder so use 0001

Am happy to report that there wasn't any need to re-install the game or fiddle with any other files as they hadn't been corrupted, did a simple cache clearing of the router and NIC which seems to have sorted it. Still not sure what caused it, but probably will never know now. Thanks for all the great advice though guys!
