another crash to desktop issue

So...i have been playing project reality flawlessly for the past month or so.
I am running Windows 7 tiny, on a asus g1s. geforce 8600m gt 256 mb. 2 gb ram, dual core 2.0 processor. I have also been playing with my laptop hooked up to a 24 inch widescreen monitor.

My problem started today when i left to go out of town and brought my laptop with me, therefore leaving my monitor at home. I arrived, tried to load up P.R. and all i can get is black screen for a few seconds, a glimpse at a cursor then crash to desktop.

I am running as admin, compatibility for xp s.p. 2
I have tried the refresh rate fix, altering the video.con file.
I have also searched through the forums and have found nothing that will solve my problem.
So now I'm coming to you all in hopes that you can get me back up and running.

Thanks in advance...
MooseMoose

you should not need to run in compatibilty mode!

since the widescreen monitor probably supports a higher resolution than your laptop screen you might have to lower the ingame resolution

it can be changed in the video.con as well:
change it to this resolution and frequency and that should work
VideoSettings.setResolution 800x600@60Hz

then you can go into video options and up that resolution again

if it fails:
to get an error msg from bf2 you can start it in windowed mode:
change your shortcut's parameters to "+fullscreen 0" ie:

Code: Select all

"C:\Program Files\EA Games\Battlefield 2\mods\pr\pr.exe" +fullscreen 0
try reproducing the error and
then google the error message you get from bf2 if you do not find a solution post back here

edit: this thread seems to correlate to your problem: https://www.realitymod.com/forum/f27-pr ... stall.html

If this is Windows 7 64 bit, make sure the Battlefield 2 folder is at C:\Program Files (x86)\EA Games, and make sure that in regedit, you have your Battlefield 2 keys at

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Electronic Arts\EA Games\Battlefield 2

Okay, after visiting the link i have gotten closer to playing again. So, thank you for that.
Here is the issue now...
I deleted battlefield 2 folder in my documents, which allowed me to start bf2 and pr again.
But now, it is displayed in a small box in center of screen, instead of taking up the whole screen, and my resolution in video settings will not let me go above 1280x1024. Which i know you said my laptop may not handle as much as the widescreen did. but my native resolution on this laptop is 1680x1050.

Other than the displaying in the center of the screen and in a small box, everything seems to be back to normal. Thanks again

okay, update.
As i raise resolution in game i get more screen filled in each time. though it will only let me go up to 1280x1024.
I tried settting my desktop res. to 1280x1024 thinking that if they matched it would fill the screen, but when i set it to that it does the same thing as in game, takes up less of the screen, and as i go down by each resolution setting i have less screen being taken up til i get to 800x600 where it's just a tiny box in the center.

Now, i know this never was an issue before, i could change desktop resolution no problem without getting less screen each time, i've always just left it on it's native(1680x1050) so i dont know what's going on now. really messing with my head, ha.

One More Time.....

I got that problem fixed, it was a setting in nvidia control panel that was set to do not scale.
Now if i set my res. to 1280x1024 i can then see game at full screen.
But, i still do not understand why i cannot get any options in game that go above the 1280x1024 setting, when my native res is 1680x1050. i know my laptop can handle more.
I've tried setting it in the video.con to a higher res. but that just forces the crash to desktop again.

using that nvidia option will worsen your image, set your desktop back to native resolution

you only have to disable windowed mode again: change "+fullscreen 0" to "+fullscreen 1" in your shortcut

to get widescreen support you can specify the resolution in the shortcut as well
this one should fix it all for you (incase u supplied the real native resolution called "WSXGA+")
"C:\Program Files\EA Games\Battlefield 2\mods\pr\pr.exe" +fullscreen 1 +widescreen 1 +szx 1680 +szy 1050
