Read multiple threads about this now, I installed patch 1.5 and pr .87 and now am getting a black screen and then crashing back to desktop. THIS IS NOT BEING CAUSED BY THE SERVER PROBLEM!

yea, I have Vista too and I am still having problems. I start BF2 or PR and It runs for about 3 seconds, then crashes back to Desktop. I was playing okay last night, woke up this morning and Installed 1.5 then .87 and then this started happening. I dont even get to the BSS flash before it CTD, any suggestions?

i fixed mine by wiping bf2 off my system, then reinstalling everything fresh
used the full client and levels .87 this time.
now it all works flawlessly, bf2 and PR

Unfortunately I just moved and my CD's are about 300 miles away so I can't do a fresh install.

deleting the "Battlefield 2" folder in "My Documents" should fix this problem too (resets all settings to default though)
BF2 will recreate the folder and its contents on next game start

have you tried to uninstall only pr and reinstall it leaving bf2 untouched?
you should also check if the installers are ok (crc check)

This worked perfectly for me. I advise others who are having CTD problems with Vista to try this.
