I believe I have the one that was installed with the last major patch/update but should I update to 3.5?

What operating system are you on JollyRojer ? Basically you do not have .NET 2.0 SP1 installed so the installer is having a problem installing the SP2 part of 2.0 on your system.

Download this one:
http://www.microsoft.com/DOWNLOADS/deta ... laylang=en. If it refuses to install, right click it, click "Properties," click Compatibility tab, and check "Run this program in compatibility mode for:", then try again.

Ahh ... then the problem is you do not have vista service pack 1 installed. No its true you cant get .NET 2.0 downloads for vista because vista has it built in ... and the first service pack for the .NET is part of the Vista SP1.
The second service pack for .NET 2.0 on vista is what the 3.5 SP1 update installs.
So you need to install service pack 1 for Vista.
And that link is not for VISTA Snares ... its for 64bit XP and early windows server editions. Basically there is no 2.0 downloads for Vista ... as its built into the operating system (which is why ... whatever the doom and gloom merchants say ... .NET is the future for microsoft platforms, they plan on it being tightly integrated with all future builds)

Yes, it isn't for Vista. However, if you set .NET to compatibility mode for XP, it will trick Vista into installing it. I have had to install older .NET's on Vista for several applications in order to make them work correctly, and the only way to get them to install is to set compatibility mode.
