Mic problems in VOIP

hello
I'm experiencing Mic problems.
Transmission using VOIP in game is intermittent and usually gets worse in game. The mic works but there is a bad echo and some times transmits in game noise (which is weird as I wear headphones).
When I do the Test Mic in setup I hear a repeating echo of my voice which gets worse until all I hear is static, it seems to be sound looping somehow. If I turn off the receive transmission the the mic starts to work fine.
The mic preforms well normally using Skype, Audacity etc.
My PC Specs are Win XP, MB - asusM3A78-EM, processor AMD 7750 dual-core and 4gb of ram.
I'm using the on board sound card ( Realtek alc1200 HDA 8 port) using the rear mic in port. I have updated the drivers and turned the acceleration down to basic in the DirectX Diagnostic Tool.
any help gratefully revived.
Thanks
Jonnym
