Smoke acting like tear gas

Smoke grenades currently provide cover. (duh) The smoke is also harmful to any person when inhaled. I've seen a tendency to run by or through smoke for cover on more than one occasion, and while soldiers IRL can hold their breath, it typically can't be done for more than 10 seconds tops, especially in 90 degree heat, while sprinting and carrying at least 60 pounds of gear. Therefore, I propose that any soldier that ends up within 15 m of a live smoke grenade suffers a tear-gas like effect similiar to the one in BF2:SF, mainly because inevitably they will breathe some of the smoke and that could start a coughing-wheezing/etc. fit for a while.

What if a choob crashed a chopper? 3 times? kick/ban? Same thing really, if idiots abuse certain features like stealing a tank then blowing up all the assets in main, admins have to do something about it.

The Taliban/INS smoke looks homemade (tell me if I'm wrong). While those will make you cough, they aren't as bad as the military smoke grenades which last longer.

Most smoke grenades have pretty toxic fumes, they certainly aren't something you want long exposure to. A slightly modified BF2:SF cough-attack could be good, I guess.

Having run through smoke grenades numerous times, and been near them, I can say that they do make you cough, but really, it's not something that needs changing. The lack of sight is far worse an enemy, not the fact you are coughing. The SF effect, even if changed to be a lot less harsh, still doesn't need to be in IMO.

Smoke inhalation over a very prolonged period can be harmful to your health, but in the short term it's just like breathing moderately thick used cigarette smoke. No effect is needed.

ok hold up. I have had many experiences with smoke grenades and can tell you that out in the field you can stand in the smoke (at its thickist) and not be affected, Only thing it has is a really strong thick smell but like Truism said its no worse then being in a room of smokers. The only time i can think of smoke making ppl cough, wheez etc is once when doing my training at pucka when one of the idiots let one off inside the ASLAV (for those US guys its alot like ur LAV25) in that situation tho we had to stay inside the vehicle as we were on exercise, and it was that prolonged time and confined space that made the affect harmful to our bodys.

The old smoke grenades we used were the M8, and those used the HC chemical. The new M83 grenades use the TA chemical instead. HC (Hexachloroethane) grenades give off a hydrochloric fume that can be hazardous, but the new TA (Terephthalic Acid) will usually just cause coughing and are only minimally hazardous.
In an open environment where smoke grenades are intended to be used, you can stand in the smoke and the effect will be similar to standing in the smoke of a campfire or cigarette second-hand smoke. It will probably cause irritation to the eyes and lungs, but not enough to cause the drastic effects common with CN/CS/OC irritants that the public commonly knows as "Tear Gas". And soldiers are taught from the beginning that you never deploy smoke grenades in confined areas unless wearing a breathing apparatus. Smoke grenades, especially the M18 colored smokes, also consume oxygen and their use indoors is not desired. Even a military chemical protective mask (Gas Mask) will not work because they do not have their own oxygen supply like an SCBA used in firefighting.
As Tonnie mentioned, your problem when using smokes isn't going to be from coughing/wheezing, but from lack of visiblity. And unfortunately, due to the game engine you can't detect when the smoke was deployed in a confined space or outdoors, so adding a "damage" effect similar to the BF2:SF canisters is not going to work effectively.
We still use HC in smoke shells fired by artillery and on other systems when not using WP/RP, but the white smoke grenades used by our troops is now the TA version. This is also why the M8 and M83 grenades are actually marked HC and TA, respectively.

I think this has been shot down well enough by the MAs.
