[?] Methods of modelling?

Alright basically i want to try getting better at modelling and maybe try something a bit harder than a pistol for example a m4a2 but a few questions. Since you usually use a side shot of the gun as reference how would you do barrels etc? Just look at pics and do it manually? Also how do you tackle details and such for example would you create the basic shape (say i started inbetween the barrel and the back stock) and then add the details and bumps or extrudes and whatever or would you add the details as you go? Probably not explained very well.

Have a look for some tutorials on modeling, they can be quite useful. But although it's a bit common to say this the best way to learn is to keep trying and practising. Speed modeling can be good if you want to improve your skills - find something you quite like and try to model it as fast as possible and as accurately as possible, but don't get bogged down in details... Equally you can try the opposite, try and model something but go slowly and focus on accuracy - This generally requires more motivation to stay focused and not get bored half-way through.

There's no right or wrong way to model. What you learn is all the tools at your disposal and how to put them to best use.

Have plenty of other reference pictures from all different angles. And with the barrel thing, assuming that it is round, just use the cylinder tool.

Hey guys i thought id ask another question but instead of wasting a new thread on it ill ask here. Basically im trying to model a handgun and i want to select individual polygons but if i click it selects a bunch of them like a whole side and not just the one i click, anyone know why?

Or do you mean hold Ctrl and then click to select the polygons?

You might want to watch out for the "o" and "space" keys too ;)

recently i came across VERY good guide about hotkeys, but its on russian, it explains default hotkeys and helps to increase productivity, because you dont need to run additional kilometres by mouse :-) if somebody interested i maybe try to translate it later if nobody knows something similar already made in english
