Mortors have the abillity to destroy weapon cashes even when the cashe is in a secure bunker or several metres of solid rock below the surface.

mortars have a big blast radius,,, case closed

I think mortors were just made to kill caches. Once I was reloading on a cache and mortors came in killed the cache but didn't harm me or anyone close to the cache.
