Problem with your connection

Ok so the lowdown on the system.
Dell XPS 410
XP Home
1.8 Intel
2GB Ram
Connection: Verizon FioS 20 down 15 up.
Connecting to wireless network through a Dlink WUA 1340 USB adapter
Wireless signal: excellent
I have already tried:
TCP optimizer
Update Dlink drivers
Updating PB
BF2 and PBsetup in firewall exceptions list
Usually my ping is very good to servers in the East cost (11-70ish). No matter what server i get into at 2-5 minute intervals i get "there is a problem with your connection" for about 1-2 seconds after which it goes back to normal.
My ping also spikes from 11 to as high as 1000.
I dont get dropped from the server but keep having these 1-2 second pauses.
It makes playing very unnerving.
I am out of ideas of what the problem could be aside from maybe my Dlink wireless USB adapter (even though i have adapted the driver). Would like to try connecting with ethernet cable but carrying the comp downstairs is a pain in the ***.
The only other option is that the router is having issues with PB (its already an exception on the XP firewall).
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
EDIT: After paying attention on the Virgina server (which is walking distance from me) i noticed that my ping stayed between 8-12 and even when i was getting the "there is a problem with your connection" pauses it wouldn't spike like on other servers. Also seemed the pauses were much shorter (almost instantaneous).
